New study: Air pollution, including wildfire smoke, NOx, ozone and particulate matter, associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Too many humans making too much pollution, notably rich white fuckers frac’ing us to death. Hold your breath in NEBC and Alberta!
News Briefs Air Pollution Associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis by UCLA Health, February 2026
A study published in Arthritis & Rheumatology found that exposure to air pollution – including wildfire smoke, nitrogen oxides (NOxspewed by frac compressors), ozone, and particulate matter (PM10)-significantly increases the risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and RA-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD).

Researchers analyzed data from nearly 80,000 U.S. Veterans, focusing on rates of new-onset RA and related lung complications, compared to exposure levels to different pollutants.
The study showed that exposure to fire smoke PM2.5 (fine particles less than 10 microns) were associated with a greater likelihood of developing seronegative RA, particularly when comparing the highest and lowest pollution quartiles. Seronegative RA is a type of RA where a person experiences classic RA symptoms – such as joint pain, swelling, morning stiffness, and fatigue – blood tests for rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) antibodies are negative. This makes it harder to diagnose as physicians must rely on clinical symptoms, imaging, and additional lab tests. The disease often still behaves like seropositive RA and can cause similar joint inflammation and damage. Treatment is usually very similar to seropositive RA.
The study findings confirm that while certain types of air pollution may trigger inflammatory joint and lung diseasesk, not all pollutants have the same effect. The trigger harmful pollutants primarily originate from wildfires, traffic, and fossil fuel combustion and seem to provoke or intensify immune-related inflammation in susceptible individuals.
