What is important is there were about 2.3 million people (70% of eligible voters) who cast a ballot in the last federal election. In many parts of rural Canada, legal land descriptions are tied to 160-acre “quarter sections” of land that were divided up around the early 1900s.What kind of reporting is this? The land was surveyed. It wasn’t “divided”!
Because those chunks of land are so big — sometimes equal to more than 50 city blocks — mail couriers often refuse to deliver to those properties because the location of the home itself is unclear or hard to reach. Other provinces, larger than Alberta with far more people and farms, used to get excellent rural mail delivery. For large properties, there are mailboxes at the end of the driveway along roads for easy delivery. I paid my way through two degrees at university by working on a farm in Ontario in exchange for free rent. Mail was delivered rain or shine, storm or not. The boxes had flags on them that are put up when the landowner puts mail in to be picked up, or Canada Post put in mail. In many rural communities, they didn’t even have names or locks on them. Rural Albertans could easily have this same quality postal service, but big oil rich fuckers get most of our money, rarely us, so we get shit service instead and rural Albertans are too chicken shit to say boo. Thomas Lukaszuk, a former Progressive Conservative MLA in Alberta, has presented his own “Forever Canadian” petition in response to Stay Free Alberta’s independence push. Unlike the Stay Free initiative, however, Forever Canadian will not force a referendum question and is instead requesting a vote on the principles of separation in the Alberta legislature.
