That seems absurd, since Canadians have always declined to be absorbed into the chaotic republic to our south, but there is no obvious reason to set aside the possibility that Bannon will destroy Canada. Few people in the world better understand how to turn anger into power.
Bannon first learned of the political potential of the internet in 2006, when he took over internet Gaming Entertainment, a strange Hong Kong-based company that employed low-wage Chinese workers to play “World of Warcraft,” collecting virtual “gold” that the company could sell to players in basements around the world.
Bannon, then a 53-year-old former Goldman Sachs banker and entertainment executive, convinced his banker friends to put $60 million into the company, which he lost when players around the world revolted and the company shut down the Chinese gold farmers.
Bannon, facing a multimillion-dollar professional setback, was awed by the energy he saw in that gamer revolt. “These guys, these rootless white males, had monster power,” he told Joshua Green, author of “Devil’s Bargain: Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, and the Storming of the Presidency.”
Bannon figured out how to harness that power. He used the misogynist Gamergate movement to direct angry young men to Breitbart News, where he connected them with white nationalist opinion leaders.
His ambition took him to the U.K. in 2014, where he worked with Cambridge Analytica, a British political consulting firm that had surreptitiously gained access to Facebook data.
Christopher Wylie, a Canadian who worked with him there, describes how Bannon started running experiments on how to amplify racist sentiments to engage voters.
“Bannon transformed CA into a tool for automated bullying and scaled psychological abuse,” Wylie wrote in his book “Mindf*ck: Inside Cambridge Analytica’s plot to break the world.”
They ran experiments online trying to identify “cognitive biases” that could be connected to underlying racist sentiments. For instance, Cambridge Analytica pulled from Facebook photos “of daughters of white men in order to pair them with photos of black men — to show white men what political correctness ‘really looked like.’ ”
Bannon’s tricks were deployed to help win the Brexit referendum — weakening Europe to the benefit of Vladimir Putin — and then elect Donald Trump.

When the narrative of science shifts from curiosity-driven, knowledge gathering for the betterment of all humankind to competitive, nationalistic, ideologically-driven projects that benefit the regime…we are in deep trouble. The is particularly true when that change happens at the same time as a purge of experts and the rise of violent paramilitary terrorizing civilians in the street.

I am hearing that RFK Jr.’s minions are going to go after HPV vaccines. I’ve got problems with these people and now you’re going to hear about them, first from a personal perspective and then from a professional one. It all boils down to this: WE HAVE A SAFE VACCINE THAT PREVENTS CANCER.
In 2003, my husband and I were going to start a family. But on my 32nd birthday I received a phone call telling me I had to make an appointment with a gynecological oncologist immediately. I then found out that I had cervical adenocarcinoma (Stage IB).
It had sprung up in 1 yr between appointments, and led to surgery, a 1-week hospitalization, 8-week recovery, and the loss of my ability to have biological children. But in *all* of this, I was lucky. I had access to healthcare and the cancer was caught early so I didn’t need chemotherapy.
Since that time, HPV vaccine has been demonstrated to be safe and very, very effective at preventing cancer, which you can see for yourself in this Figure from a paper by Lei et al. (NEJM, Sept 30, 2020).
HPV vaccine can also prevent other cancers caused by the virus, including head and neck and penile cancers. There is no credible evidence of harm.
Another thing that is often overlooked with HPV vaccine is that is also prevents precancerous lesions, the treatment of which can be exceedingly painful. The overall costs related to HPV-related medical conditions have been estimated to cost in excess of *8 BILLION DOLLARS ANNUALLY* in the U.S.
In summary, from both a personal and professional perspective, to hinder access to HPV vaccine would be to directly cause preventable deaths in both men and women, and to cost the U.S. $8B per year. And I will fight it with everything in my power, I can promise you that.
