BACKGROUND
Joanna Berry is a Canadian immigration and refugee lawyer in Ontario, Canada. On October 2, two Niagara Police Officers, one of them a sergeant detective, paid her a visit to her home. They told her they were there on behalf of the Ottawa Police Department because of her “personal social media.” They begin to tell her that “10 lawyers who are of the Jewish faith” have filed a complaint with the police about her social media. As you can tell from the video, Joanna Berry, is outraged by the visit and clearly distraught. I reached out to the Niagara Regional Police for comment but they did not respond to my inquiry. I spoke with Joanna Berry also and she gave OTL Media permission to publish the video. She told us that she wants Canadians to see it and for the video to be a warning.

What terrifies me most abut this scenario is that individuals with narrowly personal motives could mobilize the police in this way. A police system that paid even lip service to “peace keeping” would refuse the role of private enforcer in this way. I really appreciate how clearly she contextualizes their behaviour. Jewish Lawyers told Canada Police that this woman was messaging them.
The Lawyers did not ask her to stop.
Police did not ask her to stop. Police did not instruct the reporting party to ask the woman to stop.
Police instead contacted another department and asked them to send someone over there to tell her to stop sending electronic messages.
The people that turned up at her door step are not the people that were originally contacted, they are not part of the ‘investigation’, they can not tell her what crime if any is being investigated. They don’t even specify WHO she is to stop messaging.
All they can tell her is: “Stop criticizing Israel”
If you can’t read between the lines:
A private citizen got in touch with a government agency and had them intimidate someone in order to silence them.
The government agency was aware that what they were about to do was not legal, so they asked ANOTHER agency to pop over and make the whole thing ‘unofficial’.
Canada just sent Sturmabteilung to this woman’s house.

The officers were following instructions and an investigation should ensue into what levels of officialdom issued the order for their delivering the warning and intimidation of Joanne. There is something so disturbing about Niagara Police coming to talk to this woman without any specifics of the case, based on Ottawa police’s say so. I feel very badly for Joanne, she stood up for herself admirably but she should have never been put in this situation.

This is beyond insane and also extremely fishy. Those men were either completely incompetent (probably a given) and/or also directly lying. They misnamed the LSO multiple times, even after a correction. Also, it’s an obvious lie that the LSO sent police detectives. It’s a regulatory body that deals with complaints internally, they don’t send cops after those of us who have practice or decorum complaints logged against us. That’s the whole point of a regulatory body.
I can’t believe they said it wasn’t bullying. Sending police to censor anti-genocide speech could not be more harassing.
I’m so glad you told them to get the fuck out of your house and I’m so sorry this happened to you. You need to find some way to get these cops disciplined, whether the Ottawa force that supposedly asked for the call, or the force that agreed to harass you.

They obviously weren’t investigating when they told her to “stop sending unwanted messages”. Investigation involves asking questions to also hear her side of the story but they came with a clear agenda and it wasn’t to investigate. It was to intimidate.
