Was anyone else as startled as I was to hear BC Conservative MLA @BruceBanman
tell the Legislature on Wednesday that women become mothers “from the moment of conception”?
That phrase is a battle cry for anti-abortion activists.
Since then the statements and posts have been flying, with Conservative Party leader @JohnRustad4BC , the party’s president, and executive director all saying the equivalent of “move along, nothing to see here” or trying to blame the sudden swirl about it on the NDP. We know women’s reproductive rights were decided in Canada 35 years ago, said Rustad, WITHOUT saying he supports them.
That sounds a lot like the way Americans were placated before being blindsided by the overturning of Roe v. Wade two years ago.
I suddenly realized that while I’ve been getting so upset, angry and DISTRACTED by the way Conservative politicians provincially and federally have been misrepresenting the facts about the toxic drug crisis, there have been A LOT of loud rumblings from them about taking away women’s reproductive rights.
Two days ago, federal conservative MP Arnold Viersen brought a petition to the House of Commons in support of the rights of the “preborn” (!!) And @PierrePoilievre
has already said as Prime Minister he will use the notwithstanding clause to override Canadians’ rights. Last night the vice president of the provincial Conservatives, @HarmanBhanguBC, posted that he’s “committed to helping women in crisis and easing adoption.”
What does “easing adoption” mean? If it’s like what’s happening in the baby-trading USA, it’s not a wonderful goal. Stealing babies from their mothers and selling them is big business, including in Canada, notably by “anti-abortion” evangelicals coercing naive pregnant girls and women into not getting abortions but rather incubating their babies for someone else that has paid big money (but the baby incubators are not told that), then giving up the baby causing wretching heart break and pain for the rest of the mothers’ lives and the babies when they find out they were bought/adopted. Horrid. Vile. Baby Industry Capitalism. Both wonderful goals, but notable for what’s not there: SUPPORTING A WOMAN’S RIGHT TO CHOOSE.
In my posts on this platform I try to focus on the issues and facts surrounding drug poisoning, and less on politics, but of course at this point it’s all intertwined. Maybe Conservatives have been hollering about “radical pro-drug policies” & “failed experiments” to distract us from their bigger agenda item. Or maybe they’re just aiming for a return to the 1900s, when women did not have choice and we killed people with “tough love” if they had issues with mental health or substance use.
This is scary stuff. It’s not what Canada is about, so I’m stepping out of my lane here to say I think we should all be alarmed.

We, the undersigned citizens, and residents of Canada, draw the attention of the House of Commons to the following:
Whereas:
- Nearly 100,000 abortions are performed annually in Canada;
- The Morgentaler Decision to have zero abortion law goes directly against the charter since it DOES NOT protect life;
- Canada is only one of two, the other nation being North Korea, to have zero abortion laws;
- Over 98% of abortions are for reasons of social or personal convenienceOh ya, sure. Prove it Arnie. Where’s the data? How many abortions are needed because of rape and cruelty by violent men? How many because life is not affordable for one human in a family, never mind 3 or 4 or 13 (climate chaos caused by human pollution is driving up costs for everything)? How many because of cowardly selfish men abandoning women when they find out there’s a kid on the way? Because of the vile cruel humans in politics and courts, best thing I’ve done in my life was choose not to have kids. The suffering ahead for all humans is unimaginable; kids will bear the brunt. Who is preparing kids for the hell their lives will be, if human pollution lets them live long enough to become adults? Rural Albertans keep insisting to me that there is nothing to worry about because God will fix everything – all our abuses to life on earth, all our greed, CO2 and methane emissions, and health and brain destroying toxic pollution. Humans have so badly fucked up our only home – earth, God quit. Besides, God is pissed at humanity’s disgusting rape religions.; and
- The Heartbeat starts when the baby is 5 weeks old. Warning!! In Arnie’s speech at link above or below, he says 6 weeks. Did he intentionally lie to the House of Commons to not alarm members of his (and Harper’s vile plan?). I’ve never yet experienced a Canadian con tell the truth.
Therefore we, the undersigned citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to create/strengthen abortion regulation nationwide.
