@LukaszukAB Oct 28, 2025:
456,365 #ForeverCanadian signatures (plus few dozen last minute arrivals). I’m told it’s the biggest petition in Canada’s history. None of this would happen if not for thousands of volunteers and your love for Canada.
Thank you!
This is Alberta’s and Canada’s victory.
Today, I submitted 456,365 Albertans’ signatures to Elections Alberta, petitioning the Premier to do the right thing, avoid a divisive and economically harmful referendum, and allow MLAs to vote and reaffirm that Alberta’s future is in Canada.
In my view, Danielle Smith is allergic to doing the right thing; she’ll file lawsuit after lawsuit to try to destroy these astounding results, and work harder to further divide to destroy Albertans. Regardless of what shit Smith hits us and democracy with, this action by Thomas, the many volunteers and Albertans signing the petition, shows Nazi USA the loyal grit of Canadians.![]()
Alberta is #ForeverCanadian
@lesfarrar3725:
He absolutely does deserve the Order of Canada. And may I say that if he were to launch a conservative, Lougheed principles based party, it may well end the existence of Smith and her self serving MAGA loving UCP. The “Conservative Legacy Party” , harkening back to Mr. Lougheed’s legacy is waiting for your leadership, Mr. Lukaszuk.
@Daria_Creates:
you all got 9% of Alberta’s entire population to sign the petition. that is a literal statistically significant proportion of the Alberta population. holy maple leafs!
@maplezero.bsky.social:
Very, very well done, sir. You’ve done more good than many will realize. Get a well deserved rest. We need you for the road ahead.
@mindfultalk.bsky.social:
Serdeczne gratulacje with profound thanks to @lukaszukab.bsky.social and to all the #ForeverCanadian volunteers for taking the lead on this vitally important work!
We so needed this good news today!
@show_me_facts:
Congratulations Thomas! I was biting my nails waiting for the count and am thrilled that you more than reached your objective. A huge salute to you from Ontario!
@ian_mccor:
That’s astounding, Thomas. Margaret Mead was right about a small group being able to change the world!
@TheMorrigan47:
What an undertaking of courage and faith!! Thank you from a grateful Canadian/Albertan.
@SerenaCMah:
The volunteers are extraordinary! This is the Alberta I love.
@youfiona:
You and all the volunteers have done an amazing job. You were organized and ready from the start, leaving the traitors in the dust.
@clarity47:
Yes it is fantastic to see all those signatures however each signature represents a five minute, volunteer interaction filled with hope and caring for our nation. In each of those boxes are hours of commitment to the country I love. Thank you

‘Put separatism to bed’: More than 450,000 signatures collected for petition to keep Alberta in Canada, Thomas Lukaszuk announced Monday that 456,388 signatures were collected to move forward on the referendum question of “do you agree that Albertans should remain in Canada?” by Cindy Tran, Oct 28, 2025. Calgary Herald
Dozens of Albertans gathered outside of the Elections Alberta office in Edmonton for the final count of signatures for the “Alberta Forever Canada Petition.”
Thomas Lukaszuk, former Progressive Conservative deputy premier and the citizen initiative lead, announced Monday that 456,388 signatures were collected to move forward on the referendum question of “do you agree that Albertans should remain in Canada?”
“Albertans have said that they don’t want anything to do with separatism, and they are asking our premier to do the right thing,” Lukaszuk said.
“Friends, when this started, my goal was to reach the required number of signatures, but I never imagined that this will turn into a movement.”
Lukaszuk said he is asking Premier Danielle Smith to ask Alberta MLAs to vote on the issue and “put separatism to bed once and for all.”
Petition results expected Jan. 6
Chief electoral officer Gordon McClure issued the petition on July 30. At that point, Lukaszuk had 90 days to collect a minimum of 293,976 signatures which needed to be submitted to Elections Alberta by Oct. 28 for the initiative to be successful.
Now, McClure and his team will have 60 days — until Dec. 27 — to verify the petition which includes validating signature sheets like electors names, addresses, signatures and dates. A random sample will be taken to confirm the signatories addresses are in Alberta and random signatories will be called to confirm they’ve signed the petition. The method will be used to reach a 95 per cent confidence level.
The results will be publicly available no later than Jan. 6, 2026.

Elections Alberta director of operations Jennifer Maskoske said they’ve hired around 100 staff who will be working Monday to Friday in two shifts from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and a weekend shift on Saturdays and Sundays working from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Maskoske said they will be utilizing their 60 days to validate the signatures collected.
“Alberta has prepared for this by doing a lot of mock scenarios, working through the Act, working through the requirements, acting as though we had an actual petition in front of us,” she said.
Government to decide what comes next: referendum or policy decision
If the signatures are validated and McClure believes the requirements have been met for a referendum, a copy of the proposal will be given to the minister and if the Legislative Assembly is sitting, the Speaker will bring it forward to the assembly or within 15 days after the start of the next sitting.
The committee that is given the proposal will either have to table a report recommending that a bill be introduced at the earliest opportunity or table a report recommending that the initiative petition and report be referred to the chief electoral officer for an initiative vote.
Justice Minister Mickey Amery congratulated Lukaszuk and his team for collecting more than the necessary number of signatures saying they’ve done a “remarkable job of bringing many Albertans to sign the petition.”
When asked whether or not the government will take the petition to a policy decision in the house or put it to a referendum he said it was “too early to speculate.” He said further details will come once the petition has been reviewed by Elections Alberta.
“We have always said, the premier has said, cabinet has said, caucus has said that we believe in a sovereign Alberta within a united Canada. That means that we want to be partners in this federation here in Canada,” Amery said.
Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi said the premier has a “big choice” ahead, pointing to whether or not a referendum will be called or debate it in the legislature.
“Albertans have been so clear that this country is big and it’s bruised and it’s crowded and it’s messy and it’s not always right, but it’s the best place on Earth. Albertans are strong, powerful Canadians,” Nenshi said.

@LukaszukAB Oct 27, 2025:
Bitter sweet… There are no more #ForeverCanadian petition signing locations. We are now gathering all petitions and tabulating the results.
Tomorrow, at Elections Alberta, we will announce the number. But it’s not only about the number. We built a movement, a community of hope.

Former deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk’s Forever Canadian petition aims to gather 300,000 signatures to prevent a referendum on Alberta’s separation from Canada. The petition seeks to influence government policy, while avoiding a divisive public vote
Lukaszuk optimistic about petition by Anna Smith, Oct 21, 2025, Lethbridge Herald
In the home stretch of signature collection, petition originator and former deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk stopped to rally with volunteers in Medicine Hat.
Lukaszuk has spent the past month on the road, visiting different centres to help collect signatures for the Forever Canadian petition and to rally morale for those who have been hard at work canvassing in their own communities.
He recalled that when beginning his work, many expressed doubt he would be able to get any interest outside Calgary and Edmonton, but this has been far from the case.
“When I started this, I had no idea what I was starting,” said Lukaszuk. “A lot of people were telling me we will probably only get signatures in Edmonton and Calgary. That’s not the case at all.
“As a matter of fact, we received as many signatures in smaller cities and in rural Alberta on a per capita basis as we did in Calgary and Edmonton.”
He estimated roughly 80 per cent of Albertans are solid Canadians, who, while having issues with other provinces or the federal government, are more than willing to stay within Canada and continue to work to solve any problems as they arise.
With roughly one week to go, they are currently on the cusp of the necessary 300,000 signatures.
Lukaszuk is cautiously optimistic they will be able to collect the final names they need, as well as what he expects to be an added 10 per cent, to ensure that they still have the necessary number after any ineligible signatures are stricken by Elections Canada.
Overall however, working to collect the needed names has been a very positive experience. He expressed deep gratitude to the volunteers in both Medicine Hat and elsewhere who have been working so hard to bring the petition to residents, as well as everyone who has added their voice to the petition.
“It’s reassuring, because over the last few years, we have lived in such negative times,” said Lukaszuk. “This has somehow emerged into a positive movement that reminds us that we can actually like each other, we can talk to each other and we can have different opinions but still respect each other.”
He anticipates municipal election day will be the best chance for last-minute signatures before the Oct. 28 deadline. Anyone interested in signing before the window of opportunity closes is encouraged to visit forever-canadian.ca/sign-the-petition to find a location, as it cannot be signed online.
Chmie:
I’m confident the petition will exceed 300k but my concern is how will Smith react? I doubt she will put it to a vote by all Albertans but instead will find an excuse such as it was rigged and ignore it.
In my view, Smith is not the boss of herself, Nazi USA Repuglicans and Alberta Repuglicans are. Most especially in charge of her is the Take Back Alberta (into the cave of hate, racism, misogyny, bigotry) Klan.![]()
