Relevant to today’s conversation about AI’s inherent sexism, here’s an email from cognitive psychologist and early AI theorist Roger Schank, arguing to Epstein that women can’t be truly intelligent, because they care too much about what other people think.

Epstein responds in the affirmative, insisting “no really smart women—none.” Schank, in turn, admits that his “very best Phd student was female,” but laments that she “decided to quit being a professor,” adding “that is the point; no matter how smart, she wanted to be liked or some such crap.”
Note how Schank also takes credit for his former PhD student’s brilliance, saying “she failed to be brilliant when I made her leave Yale; she needed a man in order to be smart; they all do.” This is the logic that allows men to justify exploiting women’s intellectual labor for their own gain.
Now, we don’t have the PhD student’s side of the story. But there’s research on women PhD students and postdocs in STEM fields showing that they often leave their programs because of the sexist mistreatment they face from men like this.

They don’t get that humans, themselves included, are emotional beings 1st & intellectual beings 2nd. It’s true of both men & women. Our intellectual takes are filtered through our internal emotional state, not the other way around. They mistakenly invert how emotions & intellect relate to one other
The result of this is that their takes are nearly pure emotion, not logic. Logical takes prioritize the fact that we are primarily emotionally beings. Yet since they don’t understand this they present their takes as intellectually sound & send others down a very inaccurate line of thinking/feeling.
Takes like these do us all a huge disservice & create the individual & societal dysfunction which most wish to alleviate. For good measure I repeat, you cannot have a sound intellectual take that minimizes or ignores emotion, because it is a, if not the, primary feature of human existence.
