Thousands march against coal seam gas

Organisers of a rally and concert today say about 4000 people marched through the streets of Murwillumbah in opposition to coal seam gas. A similar rally in Lismore earlier this year attracted more than 7000 people. However, Lock the Gate spokesman Michael McNamara was not fazed by the reduced crowd. He said he did not think recent comments made by State Planning Minister Brad Hazzard to Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell that coal seam gas was coming ‘whether you like it or not’, had deterred potential protesters. “When we were planning for the day we thought we’d have about 3000 people,” he said. Lock the Gate Northern Rivers spokeswoman Annie Kia said ‘gasfield free’ declarations made by communities across the Northern Rivers proved the population was not becoming complacent. “That is completely not what’s happening, because this gasfield free strategy is running virally across the Northern Rivers,” she said. “It shows no sign of stopping. “Community after community is doing this and every household on every road in their community is getting results. “We’re just at the beginning of this movement.” [Emphasis added]
