Today I joined Indigenous women’s organizations condemning the Liberal government’s appalling $7 billion cuts to Indigenous Services Canada and Crown-Indigenous Relations, two ministries that are already grossly underfunded.
And it’s especially disturbing that at the same time they’re investing billions into the military industrial complex, ignoring their legal obligations to end the ongoing genocide against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.
The federal government has accepted the findings of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and has recognized that this violence amounts to an ongoing genocide. Carney is backtracking commitments to MMIWG2S+ through his so called “national interest projects”.
Is the safety of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people not in the national interest?
Without delay, it must reverse these callous cuts and immediately commit to providing long term, sustainable funding to organizations, agencies and family groups to address the growing violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people
