While that warm blue flame emanating from the gas stove in your kitchen may seem harmless, even comforting, increasing reports suggest that the 40 million American homes using gas in the house have invited trouble inside. Turns out that all these stoves, whether on or off, are leaking poisonous chemicals, putting human lives at risk. First step: Education. In New York State, which has banned natural gas in new buildings, a legislative proposal is afoot to require warning labels (ala cigarette packs) cautioning against burning gas in the house.
