I’ll be honest with you: I’m not sure that belief exists in America right now. Americans, by and large, stopped resisting long before Minneapolis. There was no real movement to protect reproductive rights. BLM fell well short of making Black lives really matter.
I don’t mean to denigrate the people who have been protesting ICE for months, or who risked their lives for BLM. Their dedication is beyond question.
I do, however, mean to denigrate the hundreds of millions of other people–myself included, honestly–who did not stand up.
America’s government has claimed the right to ignore its own laws. To invade neighborhoods with military force. To prosecute its opponents. To dehumanize. To kill.
Anger without action is not resistance.
Resistance is possible. We’re seeing it right now in Iran. Even in states where authoritarian violence and control are much greater than in America, people can paralyze a system and reengineer the process of power. But resistance requires risk.and massive sacrifice, which most humans are too selfish and too greedy to give, not even to protect the lives of their own fucking children. When I spoke up against the endless harms caused by frac’ing, notably the permanent loss of water, I was stunned at how many ordinary people demanded I give them money (like a million or more, which I didn’t have), threatened me and my dogs, and or tried to silence me – because Encana and the gov’s, AER told them I was going to take their money away from them – which they believed without any evidence – same as they believe the lie that immigrants steal all our cookies when it’s the fucking rich stealing them all.
Resistance requires putting yourself in harm’s way. Taking an economic hit. Making a real sacrifice to demonstrate solidarity to someone who has no other reason to trust you. Resistance isn’t protest. It’s persistent disruption and non-compliance. And it’s imagination.
Americans have tremendous advantages: Decentralized elections. A diverse media. Independent civil society. Resistance requires recognizing that these are vestiges of a system that needs to be rebuilt, rather than insurance against an authoritarianism that is already here.
So, no, authoritarianism isn’t on the brink of winning in America. It won yesterday. It won today. Unless something changes, it will win tomorrow.
But it doesn’t have to.

I’m a former defense attorney and currently a civil liberties attorney with no political dog in this fight. I watched the video at least 10 times from different angles and at different speeds and waited to offer an opinion, which I still reserve the right to change if additional information changes the calculus.
It is very clear that the officers instigated the confrontation. The woman initially tried to wave them past her.
ICE officers have no authority to search a US citizen or arrest her (unless there’s probable cause to believe she’s harboring undocumented individuals, not a contention here). A woman surrounded by masked, armed men who have no law enforcement authority over her has every right to try to escape. Video shows her steering wheel is turned to the right, clearly an attempt to leave WITHOUT hitting anyone and steer clear of the officer standing towards the front of her car. That officer had time to step to the side, which is where he was when he shot her.
Even a real police officer would not have the right to shoot at her for trying to flee. This is well-established in the case law; deadly force may not be used simply to prevent someone from getting away. Given that the ICE officers had no law enforcement authority to begin with, AND the video footage shows she was trying to escape a perceived threat, not to kill anyone, the crime is all the more inexcusable.
I’m praying for the victim’s family, especially her children. I’m also praying for all the conservatives who are so unprincipled and lost they’re excusing this terrible crime, and gloating over a death that will leave three young children motherless, because of the victim’s politics.

The woman shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Jan. 7, was identified by her mother as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good.
Donna Ganger told the Minnesota Star Tribune that her daughter lived in the Twin Cities with her partner. In a joint statement, several Minneapolis City Council members confirmed she lived in the city.
“That’s so stupid” that she was killed, Ganger said, after learning some of the circumstances from a reporter. “She was probably terrified.”
Ganger said her daughter is “not part of anything like that at all,” referring to protesters challenging ICE agents.

Good had previously been married to Timmy Ray Macklin Jr., who died in 2023 at the age of 36. Macklin’s father, Timmy Ray Macklin Sr., was shocked to hear the news that Good had been shot and killed.

According to video from the scene, a man heard gunshots and ran outside. The wife of the victim, who was in the car, is sitting on the ground nearby with a dog, visibly distressed. In the video, she is heard saying they had stopped to film, she yelled something, and moments later agents fired, fatally shooting the woman.
What happens next is even more alarming.
A man identifying himself as a physician attempts to approach the scene to provide medical assistance. He repeatedly tells agents that someone medically trained needs to intervene, that the victim is bleeding, and that a doctor is required to assess or pronounce death. Instead of allowing aid, agents point guns at him, threaten him, and force him to back away… leaving the woman shot inside the car without assistance.
Eventually, medics arrive and remove the woman from the vehicle.
This is an active, developing situation. More verified information is needed, but the video raises serious and urgent questions about use of force, denial of medical aid, and accountability.

May 4, 1970, Kent State University. Fourteen-year-old Mary Ann Vecchio cries over the body of slain protestor Jeffrey Miller, shot by the Ohio National Guard. A photo of her is snapped, one that will win a Pulitzer Prize. The photo runs on the front page of newspapers across the country. The governor of her home state of Florida proclaims Vecchio part of a communist conspiracy. She is shunned by her community, receiving tens of thousands of pieces of hate mail. Despite the killing of four students and wounding of nine more by government forces, a Gallup poll taken a week later reveals sixty per cent of Americans blame the students for the massacre. Two-and-a-half years later, President Nixon wins re-election in a massive landslide, garnering 520 electoral college votes from 49 states. None of the guardsmen are ever criminally convicted for the killings.
Yesterday, 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen and mother of a six-year-old, was murdered by ICE agents. After shooting her, the ICE agents even prevented her from receiving medical care. The puppy killing Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said Good had it coming because she was engaging in “an act of domestic terrorism.” Donald Trump wrote of the incident that it was self-defense, claiming Good “violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer.”
They used that same “fear for their lives” bullshit at Kent State too, and a lot of Nixon supporters bought it, saying the students had it coming, sending thousands of pieces of hate mail to Vecchio for daring to cry over one of the murder victims.

Some are saying the murder of Good is the “turning point;” this is the last straw that will finally spell the end of Trump. It is no such thing. Kent State didn’t harm Nixon. If January 6 didn’t damage Trump, neither will this.
It is likely that Trump will try to prevent the mid-terms from taking place. Even during the U.S. Civil War and the Second World War, the U.S. held elections, so he probably won’t be successful. And so, failing that, he will try to subvert them by usurping control of voting systems and using troops and law enforcement for intimidation of voters and election officials alike.
The tragic murder of Renee Good isn’t the final straw, it’s another straw. Americans cannot let up pressure on this administration. They must continue to fight, demand accountability, demand the release of the full and unredacted Epstein files, continue protesting and pressuring elected officials to stop Trump in any way possible to ensure the midterms are as free and fair as possible.
Assuming the elections are fair, it isn’t looking good for Trump, and so he and his cronies will try to steal from and damage the nation as much as possible in the interim, because they know the ride is likely coming to an end. Things aren’t going to get better after this incident,; they will continue to get worse. The candy store is still open for them and they’ll rob the shit out of while they can. The only hope is for Americans to not be complacent, keep the pressure up, and VOTE in November.
