About a quarter of Albertans support the province leaving Canada, but the majority — nearly two-thirds — are against it, according to a new poll from Abacus Data.
The poll also suggests that more than half of Albertans believe Premier Danielle Smith would vote in favour of separation in a referendum, despite Smith’s repeated position that she prefers a strong and sovereign Alberta, within a united Canada.Smith lies like Trump, stupidly and non stop and her even more stupid base believe her. Guess the majority of Albertans have learned she’s not an honest person
Abacus surveyed 1,000 Albertan adults between Feb. 20 and 25. That followed Smith’s televised address to the province on Feb. 19, where she blamed the feds for her stupidity, Nazism, greed, betrayals, incompetence, vicious bigotry, and intentionally cruel fuck ups by her royal self and her traitorous extremist-evangelical-controlled UCP discussed frustrations with federal policies and laid the groundwork for additional referendum questions.
The poll was conducted online with a random sample. The margin of error for a comparable probability-based sample of the same size is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
Twenty-six per cent support independence
Twenty-six per cent of respondents said they either strongly or somewhat support an independent Alberta, with 64 per cent either strongly or somewhat disagreeing. Nine per cent of respondents were undecided.
The numbers are similar to a recent survey on separation by the Angus Reid Institute.
The Abacus poll also suggests many are firmly entrenched in their position. Of those opposed to separation, 56 per cent said they were strongly against it. Thirteen per cent of those in support were strongly in favour.
“There is this majority opinion in the province that I think is probably rock solid, and despite a significant effort to persuade them, they’re not likely going to move,” said David Coletto, founder and CEO of Abacus Data.
Support for independence was highest in rural areas outside of Edmonton and Calgary, with 35 per cent of respondents in favour.
Groups most highly opposed to the idea include Albertans aged 60 and over and women.
Of the respondents who voted for the NDP in the last provincial election, 82 per cent oppose independence. The numbers are a little closer among those who voted UCP in 2023 — 42 per cent support independence, while 48 per cent oppose it.
Mitch Sylvestre, CEO of separatist group Alberta Prosperity Project, said he thinks there are many Albertans who would not be inclined to share their honest opinions with a pollster, and that his group is hearing from many in favour of separation.
“Polls are irrelevant, as far as we’re concerned here. We’re not paying attention to them,” he told CBC News.
“We’re going to go talk to every Albertan one at a time,” he said. “And by the time the vote comes, we’ll have talked to a lot of Albertans. And, you know, maybe they’ll understand what we’re talking about and maybe they won’t. And you know what, I’ve always said, this is a democratic process, so I’ll live with the results.”
Coletto said respondents always have the option to say they are unsure. He said the poll is reflective of the current moment in time, and numbers could shift in the lead-up to a referendum, if it is to be held.
The citizen initiative petition, of which Sylvestre is the proponent, asks: “Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?”
It needs 177,732 signatures collected by May 2 in order to trigger a referendum. If that happens, it would be added to the ballot for the Oct. 19 referendum announced by Smith last month.
Perceptions around Smith’s separation position
The poll also asked respondents how they thought some political leaders would vote in a referendum on separation.
Fifty-three per cent said they thought Smith would vote in favour of separation, the highest of the five leaders presented as options in the poll.
Twenty-nine per cent said they believed Smith would vote to remain in Canada, while 18 per cent were unsure.
“I have been very clear: I support a strong and sovereign Alberta within a united Canada,” Smith said in a statement.
While it does not reflect Smith’s actual voting intention, Coletto said the question was asked to shed light on the perceptions Albertans have about her.
“I do think that the question itself, while atypical, I think gives us a lot of insight into how Albertans feel what her position is, despite what she might be saying or how she’s saying it,” said Coletto.
Sylvestre said he has also heard Smith maintain a clear position.
“I would suggest that at some point we have to take her at her word that she is actually not in support of Alberta independence,” said Sylvestre.
Twenty-two per cent of respondents said they thought Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre would vote in favour of Alberta separation. Poilievre has also said he is in favour of a united Canada.
Sixteen per cent said they believed former Alberta premier Jason Kenney would vote to separate, while seven per cent and six per cent said the same of former premier Rachel Notley and current Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi, respectively.
The Abacus polling also looked at whether attitudes would shift if Poilievre were prime minister. The results suggest about half would feel the same in their position, while 23 per cent would be less supportive of separation.

Really? APP legal counsel Jeffrey Rath articulated exactly the opposite opinion less than a year ago in his Substack post entitled in all caps, “ALBERTA NEEDS TO PETITION FOR AMERICAN STATEHOOD”. Rath enthused about his alleged beloved home being devoured by America, “There is no doubt that President Donald Trump would happily announce Alberta Statehood as the GREATEST REAL ESTATE DEAL SINCE THE LOUISANA PURCHASE as the culmination of the AMERICAN 250th ANIVERSARY [sic] CELEBRATION.”
In March of last year, Rath was seen in a Facebook video bragging about assembling a delegation to travel to Washington to meet with the Trump administration to “apologize” for Canada’s errant conduct and for “Alberta petitioning for US statehood.”You don’t get to talk for me Mr. Scumbag Rot for Brains Rath. Despite extensive online evidence to the contrary, APP now maintains they are solely interested in Alberta independence. Why the flip-flop? Perhaps because it has become obvious that proposing a simple sell-out to the hostile and erratic Trump administration is unpalatable even to most hard-core Alberta separatists.
Recent opinion polling showed that only 5 percent of Albertans support being absorbed by the U.S. Hence the bait and switch.
While allegedly rejecting joining the U.S., the APP website still itemizes their dangerous plans for immediate and deep integration with Donald Trump’s America, including:
- A proposed $500 billion line of credit backstopped by Alberta’s oil resources. Nothing says independence like owing Donald Trump half a trillion dollars.
- “Framing Alberta’s independence as aligned with U.S. national security and energy strategy…”
- Adopting the U.S. dollar as Alberta currency “in the interim”.
- Inviting U.S. election observers “to ensure the referendum’s integrity and fairness.”

Rath and other unelected extremists have apparently met with Trump administration officials in a sensitive compartmented information facility (SCIF), typically used to exchange highly classified information. White House representatives did not deny meetings have taken place but assured the media no senior officials were involved.
Another fringe separatist group, the Republican Party of Alberta, publicly outed 18 members of Danielle Smith’s government who they say signed the independence petition. Like the APP, the Republican Party of Alberta maintains with a straight face that they have no connection to the U.S., or their namesake political party now dismantling democracy in America. Whether they publicly admit their alliance with MAGA America or not, Alberta extremists reflect many of the ugly opinions now sadly endemic south of the border.
Take Back Alberta leader David Parker posted on X that “Donald Trump is the greatest President in American history. No one comes close to his aura. The new Golden Age is upon us!” In another post Parker said, “Trump is right, the absolute best thing for Canada would be to become the 51st state.”
Rath’s active social media accounts question long-established climate science. Rath has posted on X that “Caucasians are over represented in Canada’s MAID Program. They can’t get rid of us fast enough!” and that the Canadian government should cut off aid to a “corrupt” Ukraine. He was also subject of a recent disciplinary hearing by the Alberta Law Society for allegedly threatening government officials with murder charges and war crimes over COVID vaccine approvals.I’ve seen a lot of incredibly cruel bullying lawyers in action, Rath takes the cake.
This MAGA-aligned mindset is so at odds with core Canadian values that almost three quarters of Albertans who oppose separation say they plan move to another province if APP extremists succeed in breaking up the country. Quebec endured decades of economic doldrums after indulging their nationalist fever-dream.

Communications between the Trump administration and Alberta’s separatist movement raised alarm at the highest levels in Canada last week. It also raised questions about Washington’s possible intentions.
Some even see dangerous parallels between American efforts to inflame Alberta separatism and the Russian campaign to gin up a separatist movement in eastern Ukraine a decade ago.
An Alberta separatist group has been speaking openly about meetings with the U.S. State Department.
“Rumour [is] that they may have a referendum on whether they want to stay in Canada or not,” U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told right-wing channel Real America’s Voice following those meetings.

“The department regularly meets with civil society types,” a U.S. State Department spokesperson confirmed to CBC News. “As is typical in routine meetings such as these, no commitments were made.”

Destabilization tactics
Maria Popova, a political science professor at McGill University and author of two books on Russian-Ukrainian relations, sees the meetings as evidence that “we’re now under hybrid attack from the U.S.”
She says the meetings are part of a larger strategy of “repetitive denials of our existence as an independent state.”
Patrick Lennox, a former RCMP intelligence manager and author of the book At Home and Abroad: The Canada-U.S. Relationship and Canada’s Place in the World, says U.S. interference efforts can also take less visible forms.
“The U.S. has declared a form of information warfare against us. They’re going to use everything that they can to destabilize our country, to disrupt us, potentially to break us apart in order to execute on their national security strategy,” he said.
Beyond direct U.S. government interference is a more amorphous campaign of influencers in U.S. President Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement such as Matt Wallace (2.3 million followers on X), who lend support to homegrown Alberta separatists online.
“It makes sense that you go for the low-hanging fruit, seeing Alberta as a province that you could peel off based on the supposedly surging separatist sentiments there,” said former Canadian diplomat and international lawyer Sabine Nölke.

Nölke was Canada’s permanent representative to the international courts at The Hague as well as ambassador to the Netherlands until 2019.
She says MAGA’s embrace of Alberta separatism doesn’t necessarily mean the U.S. has a concrete plan to annex the province, “but to sow confusion, doubt and discomfort … the sense that Canada is fragile.”
“I would like to suggest that the government do a bit of research into this, just to gauge how much of an astroturfed, artificial threat this whole separatist operation is, in the model of the Donbas,” Nölke said.
A fringe movement storms to power
The Donbas is the eastern Ukrainian region where, in 2014, Russian agents and Russian money leveraged a small homegrown separatist movement to take over Ukraine’s industrial heartland.It stuns me that anyone worships kid rapist ultra stupid coward ugly lousy business man lying Trump. The separatists seized power and declared the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics, following votes overseen by armed militiamen. In 2022, a second round of coerced voting annexed the Donbas to Russia.
Popova sees parallels between the Donbas and the Alberta government’s approach.

After B.C.’s premier called the Alberta separatist meetings in Washington “treason,” Smith said she would not “demonize or marginalize a million of my fellow citizens when they’ve got legitimate grievances.”
“That’s the danger here,” said Popova. “If they think ‘we’re powerful enough, we have legitimacy, we’ve been elected, we are the leaders of this province, so we can play this game with Ottawa.'”
Meetings in Washington
Rath, co-founder of the Alberta Prosperity Project, told CBC News that the Americans “are extremely enthusiastic about the prospect of a free and independent stealing every rich resource in Alberta.”

Those claims echo Russian propaganda in 2014 that pushed the idea that eastern Ukrainians were culturally more Russian than Ukrainian, and would be more at home with people like them.

They are effective partly because Canadians, including Albertans themselves, tend to overestimate how conservative Albertans really are, at least on social issues.
Texans and Albertans may share a love of rodeo, but their politics have little in common.

For example, a 2022 poll suggested eight per cent of Albertans believe that abortion should be banned except to save a woman’s life, compared to 11 per cent of British Columbians and Quebecers, and 13 per cent of Ontarians. In Texas, 42 per cent believe abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.

She says Ukraine in 2014 was very different from the tough adversary Russian troops encountered in 2022.
“They had not prepared. They did not expect this.” Ukrainians found it hard to imagine that their neighbours could turn on them so aggressively, Popova said.
“And that’s another parallel.”
History suggests it can be difficult to resist a determined effort by a superpower in conjunction with a small, but real, separatist movement.The separatists and Smith need to be investigated, but Nazi Carney and his MOU with traitor Smith show us he serves the separatists, America and American corporations, not Canada or Canadians.
