The White House has accused the Nobel Committee of placing “politics over peace” for awarding its most coveted prize to a Venezuelan pro-democracy activist over President Donald Trump.
On Friday, the Committee announced María Coria Machado would receive the Peace Prize for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela”.
Trump has been outspoken about his desire for the award, taking credit for ending several global conflicts. He regularly brought it up, including during his address to the UN General Assembly in September.
“The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace,” White House communications director Steven Cheung said after the announcement.
“President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives,” Cheung wrote on X. “He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”

Ms. Machado is a vocal supporter of Israel’s racist Likud Party and earlier this year she delivered remarks at a conference of European fascists, including Geert Wilders and Marie Le Pen, which openly called for a new Reconquista, referencing the ethnic cleansing of Spanish Muslims and Jews in the 1500s.
The Nobel Peace Prize should go to individuals who have shown moral consistency by bravely advocating justice for all people, not to politicians who demand democracy in their own nation while supporting racism, bigotry and fascism abroad.
We call on Ms. Machado to renounce her support for the Likud Party and anti-Muslim fascism in Europe. If she refuses to do so, the Nobel Prize committee should reconsider its decision, which has undermined its own reputation. However, Venezuela’s María Corina Machado’s announcement of the prize was still a “victory” for the United States. As the leader of the opposition party, backed by the White House and the CIA, she was once highly expected to lead a color revolution to overthrow Maduro’s rule. Although she failed and was stripped of her right to run for president in 2024 by a Venezuelan court, she has at least earned Western prestige. This result will also help Norway and the Nobel Committee avoid significantly offending Trump.
There are many political opposition groups around the world. The fact that a Venezuelan opposition leader was singled out for the prize this year is largely due to Trump’s recent provocations against the Venezuelan government. The US military has recently launched numerous strikes against what the US claims are “drug trafficking vessels” near Venezuelan waters, putting pressure on the Maduro government. Trump clearly intends to bring about regime change in Venezuela.
Undoubtedly, unlike other prizes, the Nobel Peace Prize has always been a Western political tool. Its so-called “independence” is a lie. There is no doubt that President Trump will remain committed to his “peace cause.”
