Tamara Lich, a key figure in the 2022 convoy protest that paralyzed downtown Ottawa for nearly a month, was back in court Wednesday to ask for permission to travel internationally, including going on a Caribbean cruise and visiting the White House.
Lich was found guilty in April 2025 of mischief and other offences for her role in organizing and sustaining the Ottawa protest, which ended only after the federal government triggered the Emergencies Act, allowing police to clear the streets.
The Ontario Court of Justice later found the protest had been “neither peaceful nor lawful.”
For her role, Lich was handed a conditional sentence including 12 months under house arrest.
A month after being sentenced last October, Lich asked for and received permission to leave her home in Medicine Hat, Alta., to attend her grandchildren’s school. Since then, she has travelled to other provinces for her job with Rebel News, a far-right Canadian media company.
While Lich hasn’t offered the court a detailed itinerary, her latest request mentions attending press events at the White House, going on a seven-day Caribbean cruise with Rebel News, and travelling to Arizona to speak with Rob Schneider, a right-wing comedian whose controversial content prompted his removal from a Saskatchewan stage in 2024.
In an affidavit supporting Lich’s request, Rebel Media’s founder and CEO Ezra Levant said he believes “the U.S. embassy is ready to assist us and Tamara in doing important journalism in the U.S., including interviewing key newsmakers.”

On its website, Rebel News says it will soon announce the speakers attending this winter’s cruise, promising that they will be “individuals who have been at the centre of some of the biggest political and cultural battles of recent years, and who bring perspectives you won’t hear on legacy media.”Why? A ‘blank cheque’ to travel
Lich published a book through Rebel News in 2023, and has filed at least four stories per month on the outlet’s website since March.
She has attended and reported online about independence events in Saskatchewan and Alberta, as well as an Independence Day celebration at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa on July 4, where she was photographed with the U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra.
Lich also hosts a podcast called House Arrest with Chris Barber, a Saskatchewan trucker who was convicted alongside her for his role in the convoy protest. Her published content focuses on her experiences during the 2022 protest, as well as on current events and personal updates.
But Crown prosecutors say the additional exemptions Lich is now seeking would give her a “blank cheque” to travel internationally. They’re opposing the request, arguing that granting it is “unnecessary” and would diminish the impact of her sentence “to an unacceptable extent.”
They also argue that granting her the freedom to promote and profit from her involvement in the convoy protest — the very activity for which she’s serving a sentence — brings “disrepute” to the judicial process that led to her conviction.The court wrecked its reputation already giving Lich a kiss of a sentence. Lich has launched her own civil case against prosecutors, the Ottawa Police Service and others. She’s also appealing the conviction for which she’s currently serving a sentence.It will be a lovely celebration across the land when her sentence gets increased.
Prosecutors are appealing the original conviction and sentence of both Lich and Barber, hoping to overturn their acquittal on the charge of intimidation and pushing for harsher punishments.
Meanwhile, a civil court injunction filed during the protest has morphed into a class action by downtown Ottawa residents that’s crawling its way through the justice system.
Earlier this month, another key convoy figure, Pat King, learned he’ll be re-sentenced after the Ontario Court of Appeal sided with Crown prosecutors who argued his original punishment was too lenient and a conviction for intimidation was warranted.

The court will hear further arguments on Aug. 14.

Pat King, a key figure in the 2022 convoy protests, will be re-sentenced after the Ontario Court of Appeal sided with Crown prosecutors who argued his original punishment was too lenient.
The Crown appealed after a trial judge convicted King on five criminal charges but acquitted him of intimidation and obstructing police.
In a decision released Friday, the Court of Appeal overturned the acquittal on intimidation, entered a conviction on that charge, and ordered a new sentencing hearing later this year at the Ontario Superior Court.
At that time, King will face fresh sentencing submissions, which will determine a new sentence that reflects both the original convictions and the added intimidation conviction.
“His purpose was to use the pressure that was being exerted against area residents to compel the Government of Canada to abstain from exercising its lawful authority to pursue the COVID-19 policies it considered to be in the public interest, and to instead change these policies to satisfy Mr. King,” the court wrote.
King was originally sentenced in February 2025 to a three-month conditional sentence, to be served under house arrest, followed by probation.
He also received credit for 161 days spent in pretrial custody after his arrest in connection with the protests that gridlocked downtown Ottawa.
‘Targeted attack on Ottawa residents’
A three-judge appeal panel concluded King played a central role in what it described as “a co-ordinated, targeted attack on Ottawa residents aimed at coercing change through highly disruptive criminal conduct.”
The judges said there was “overwhelming evidence” that even before protesters and trucks arrived in Ottawa, King intended to occupy the downtown core by gridlocking streets and causing distress to residents, businesses and workers through continual horn honking and other disruptive tactics.
“Mr. King not only incited these activities, he instructed his followers to resist police and ignore court-ordered injunctions,” the decision said.
Since coming to Ottawa for the protests known as the Freedom Convoy, King has continued to use his social media presence to speak about his court appearances, the convoy and other grievances as a way to raise money for his legal bills.
Reading the decision live to viewers on Friday, a tearful King was resigned to now serving time behind bars, saying he would do so “with his head held high.”
He claimed he did not have the funds to continue fighting the case.
“You got what you wanted, so to all those who were people crying about how we disrupted you, you got it, congratulations,” he said to about 27,000 viewers.

At King’s original sentencing, Crown prosecutors sought a sentence of 10 years in prison. King’s lawyers argued for a sentence of three years’ probation, taking into account the time he had already served in custody.
The appeal court said King’s new sentence should “reflect a full appreciation of the public impact of the offences, as well as the scope, duration and persistence of Mr. King’s actions.”
The appeal ruling could have broader implications for other Freedom Convoy cases. Tamara Lich and Chris Barber are also awaiting decisions from the Ontario Court of Appeal on their convictions and sentences.

OTTAWA — The Ontario Court of Appeal has found “Freedom Convoy” organizer Pat King guilty of intimidation and has ordered a new sentencing hearing.
King was charged with a number of offences for his leading role in the February 2022 demonstration that gridlocked much of downtown Ottawa for more than three weeks.
The protesters used hundreds of vehicles, including big rig trucks, to choke the city streets and blasted horns at all hours. Some residents later testified at a federal inquiry that they were afraid to leave their homes and had trouble sleeping.
The demonstrators were loosely organized, with many opposed to government COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and to the Liberal government under Justin Trudeau. Some participants said they wanted to overthrow the government.
The protest eventually ended after Trudeau invoked the federal Emergencies Act for the first time in Canadian history, granting extraordinary powers to government and police to remove the vehicles and shut down the demonstration.
King was convicted in November 2024 of five counts, including mischief, counselling mischief and disobeying a court order.
He was given a 12-month conditional sentence, which included nine months of time served and three months’ house arrest with a year of probation.
At the same trial, King was acquitted on three counts of intimidation. The Crown appealed the acquittal on one count of intimidation for blocking or obstructing a highway. The Crown also argued that King had been given an unusually lenient sentence in the original trial.
The Appeal Court found the trial judge erred in law by finding that King’s participation in the “Freedom Convoy” was part of a lawful protest.
“Put simply, criminal conduct is not less criminal because it occurs during a lawful protest,” the panel of three judges wrote in the decision, released on Friday.
The Appeal Court ruling said King should have been found guilty of intimidation through a correct application of the law, and convicted him.
The court has ordered a sentencing hearing to take place at a later date.
The judges wrote that King’s initial sentence was a “lenient penalty” and noted the trial judge was concerned that imposing a harsh sentence could create a chilling effect on participation in political protests.
“This was not a peaceful protest that ‘unfortunately grew out of control and was allowed to go on and on and morphed into criminal activity,’ as the trial judge suggested in his sentencing reasons,” the decision said.
“Rather, this was, from the outset, a co-ordinated, targeted attack on Ottawa residents aimed at coercing change through highly disruptive criminal conduct.”
