Yukon Territorial election called; wiping out the frac moratorium

WILL THERE BE FRACKING IN THE YUKON? by Donald J. Roberts, March 2021 Newsletter, Yukoners Concerned

Please be aware that  the 2021 Yukon Territorial election has been called and that means the
“NO FRACKING” MORITORIUM IS CANCELLED.

Chance Oil and Gas Limited (formerly Northern Cross (Yukon) Limited) has applied to YESAB to perform maintenance and extended flow testing on 8 drilled wells in Eagle Plains.

Chance Oil and Gas’s  YESAB application is confusing in that they want to permanently cap 5 of the wells and put in abeyance the 3 remaining wells.  Abeyance means the 3 wells would be ready for production and flaring off of excess natural gas.

We cannot have it both ways. As Yukoners we can’t object to oil and gas activity in the Alaska National Refuge (ANWR), birthing grounds of the Porcupine Caribou Herd and then have Yukon keep open the possibility for future drilling in Eagle Plains, the wintering ground for the herd.

As well, we know for a fact that the geology of Eagle Plains is shale and if drilling is allowed there, in the future, that it will mean “fracking”. This means that massive amounts of water used in the fracking process will be polluted forever.

Any activity such as roads, camps and drilling in the Eagle Plains region will also be a major threat to the future of the Porcupine Caribou Herd.

YESAB needs to hear from Yukoners that we Do Not need oil and gas development because as well as the danger to caribou we are concerned about the major impacts of Climate Change. All remaining reserves of fossil fuel now need to remain in the ground. Yukon has declared a Climate Emergency.   Chance Oil needs to cap all 8 wells. No more oil and gas activity.

Frac’ing insanity in the Yukon. Chance Oil & Gas (was Northern Cross Ltd) wants $2.2 billion in damages (even though frac’ing is a major money loser and Chance says they don’t need to frac) because of frac moratorium.
