Greenland authorities have forced a US oil company connected to Donald Trump to postpone drilling wells in the Arctic territory, defying claims by the US president’s envoy that Americans could be extracting crude by next year.
Amid Trump’s imperialist threats, tensions have been rising on Greenland’s eastern coast after the oil company brought drilling equipment ashore in July without permission, drawing a “strong warning” from the government.
Just week before Greenland Energy intended to sink its first wells into the tundra, the government said on Thursday: “The necessary regulatory process cannot be completed, and the necessary approvals cannot therefore be obtained before the planned start of drilling.”
It said that during talks Greenlandic officials had expressed concern that the timetable was too tight to assess the environmental and social impact.
The authorities will have to decide whether to sanction drilling in a protected wetland that is home to rare birds and the muskoxen on which local hunters depend. At the earliest, drilling could now commence in the winter of 2027, the government and the company said.
That is a long way off the prediction made as recently as May by Jeff Landry, the hard-right Louisiana governor whom Trump named as his envoy to Greenland. He said after a visit that oil supposedly lying under Greenland could ease the energy crisis caused by the US attack on Iran.
Landry, whose stated goal is to “make Greenland a part of the US”, said: “We could have those barrels on production within 10 months or so.”
Robert Price, the Greenland Energy chief executive, who maintains that oil worth $1tn could lie under the remote Jameson Land region, said: “Greenland Energy remains committed to advancing its oil exploration programme responsibly and in accordance with Greenland’s regulatory process, and in full compliance with Greenlandic authorities.”

Greenland Energy’s British partner 80 Mile said in an update for investors on Wednesday that the delay was due to the need to “complete the permitting and regulatory approval process”.
80 Mile holds exploration licences granted before Greenland stopped issuing them in 2021, citing the climate crisis.
Greenland Energy, formed last year, has announced plans to spend $60m (£44m) raised from investors to fund drilling in exchange for a majority stake in the project.
Its representatives have said its oil venture is “not related to American annexation”, yet the company has established multiple connections to the Trump administration.
Phil McGraw, better known as the chatshow host Dr Phil, has a deal with Greenland Energy to “capture the mission of these modern-day wildcatters” for a documentary series to be broadcast on television and social media. He recently appeared in the Oval Office alongside Trump, having served on the president’s religious freedom commission.
A US navy veteran who is working on Golden Dome, the missile defence plan for which Trump says controlling Greenland is “vital”, sits on Greenland Energy’s board. And Kenneth Griffin, a Wall Street billionaire who gave $1m towards Trump’s second inauguration, bought 9% of Greenland Energy’s shares in April.
Rod McIllree, 80 Mile’s boss, said: “While we are disappointed that the timing of the Jameson drilling programme has been impacted, the company remains fully committed to advancing this highly prospective project.”

The Greenland government has issued a “strong warning” after a U.S. oil company with ties to Donald Trump moved drilling equipment into position for a project that hasn’t received official approval, in what is being interpreted as a possible new front in Trump’s attempts to annex the autonomous and self-governing territory.
“The licensee did not have the necessary approvals from the mineral resources authority in place before initiating this operation,” the Ministry of Trade and Mineral Resources said in a July 30 release. That was after Texas-based Greenland Energy—a company founded last year with fewer than a dozen employees, according to its LinkedIn profile—moved the gear to a site on Nunap Qeqqa (Jameson Land Basin), a remote peninsula about halfway up Greenland’s eastern coast.

That was a signal that Greenland Energy had “crossed a red line before even starting to drill,” France 24 writes.
It might sound like a small oversight or even an accidental error. But “by placing logistics elements in there, preparing for the drilling, it sends a signal that ‘we’re going to go ahead and do this with or without your approval’,” Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Scott Clancy, a fellow at the Canadian Global Affairs Institute and former NORAD director of operations,” told Global News. “Or we’ll ask for approval after we have it, which you’ll have no choice but to give.”
Either way, he added, “that sets a very difficult precedent as it pertains to the protection of sovereignty.”
Greenland “stopped issuing new oil licences in 2021 over environmental concerns,” Mediate reports, in a post illustrated with a screengrab of Trump casting a covetous glare over a Greenlandic village. “But British company 80 Mile previously secured exploration rights in Jameson Land. Corporate filings show Greenland Energy plans to acquire a majority stake in that project in return for financing exploration, subject to government approval.”
In a shareholder update last week, the company said it was planning to drill exploratory wells over the winter of 2026-27. “Recent high-level meetings between project leadership and Greenlandic regulatory and oversight authorities have been constructive, and we continue to be encouraged by the progress being made toward the remaining approvals required for drilling,” the notice stated.I do not trust a word the company says or writes or does. Greenland Energy chair and major shareholder Larry Swets, who “appears to enjoy access to Trump’s circle,” has said the drilling project is “not related to American annexation,” the Guardian writes. But also claimed at a community meeting in June that it had permission to bring drilling equipment ashore.
“Our enthusiasm for the project led us to communicate in a way that created confusion,” Swets said at the time.
Permission or not, Trump’s envoy to Greenland, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, “has said Greenland could be pumping oil next year,” the Guardian says.
In a statement and sign-on that cited the Guardian story, Sierra Club Canada said Canadian firms will be helping Greenland Energy expand its footprint on Jameson Land, with 300 containers of drilling equipment scheduled to set sail from the Port of Valleyfield, Quebec Sept. 12.
“The Canadian Government must not allow Canadian corporations and Canadian ports to play a role in helping the U.S. and U.S. corporations force oil exploration and drilling onto Greenland,” Sierra said.
The project previously came to light in March, in a Canadian Press story that identified two Canadian companies—Estevan, SaskatchewanCalgary, Alberta-based Stampede Drilling Inc., and Quebec City-based shipping and high Arctic hauling firm Groupe Desgagnés—that are supporting the project. The story quoted a promotional video shot on Jameson Land that shows oil naturally seeping out of the ground.
“It’ll be like the oilfields of the ’20s and ’30s and ’40s,” enthused Greenland Energy CEO Robert Price. “The pressure and the oil will actually come at you.”

Unauthorized entry into this National Wildlife Area is a violation under paragraph 3.3(1)(h) of the Wildlife Area Regulations.
The Wildlife Area Regulations restrict activities in National Wildlife Areas to protect habitats and wildlife, including migratory birds and species at risk. Vessels can disturb wildlife and their habitats by making noise, creating waves, causing pollution, or getting too close. Requiring permits to access National Wildlife Areas helps protect these sensitive ecosystems by allowing only activities that support conservation.
The fine will be directed to the Government of Canada’s Environmental Damages Fund.
As a result of this conviction, the company’s name will be added to the Environmental Offenders Registry. The Registry contains information on convictions of corporations registered for offences committed under certain federal environmental laws.

The Danish investigative outlet Danwatch quoted the head of the shipping company as confirming the delivery was for Greenland Energy.
Greenland Energy has declined to respond to questions from the Guardian. A letter it sent to shareholders on Thursday said: “Recent high-level meetings between project leadership and Greenlandic regulatory and oversight authorities have been constructive, and we continue to be encouraged by the progress being made toward the remaining approvals required for drilling.” It said that after those discussions, just one well would be drilled to begin with.
As a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, decisions about Greenland’s natural resources rest with its local elected leaders, who now face a delicate decision. They could grant permission for oil drilling, even though the planned wells appear to fall within a conservation area protected by the Ramsar convention on wetlands. Or they could refuse and, some worry, give Trump a pretext to advance his imperialist agenda.
The Greenland government’s statement said it “would not be proportionate” to demand the equipment be removed. An application for permission remained under processing, it added.

Two days later, Trump posted an ominious digitally altered image to Truth Social depicting himself as a giant looming over a Greenlandic town, captioned “Hello, Greenland!”
A day earlier, Trump had appeared on the right-wing network Real America’s Voice, where host Steve Gruber reminded him that he had predicted Greenland would be under US control by the time he leaves office in 2029.
“You’ll be right,” Trump replied. “Greenland is important. Not from their standpoint, from our standpoint. You should make that bet.”
Before this week’s comments, Trump had spoken far less publicly about Greenland since January, when he threatened to use military force to take over the island if Denmark did not cede it. To pressure NATO allies, Trump threatened steep tariffs on several European countries, but backed off after Europe pledged retaliatory tariffs, causing panic in the financial markets.
“Let nobody think Trump has given up on taking Greenland,” said John O’Brennan, professor of European politics at Maynooth University in Ireland. He added that Greenland Energy’s unauthorized activity “is the latest act of lawlessness his acolytes are engaged in.”
Kenneth Roth, the former executive director of Human Rights Watch, responded to the story by asking, “Has Trump’s invasion of Greenland already begun?”
Historian Ruth Ben-Ghiat suggested it was possible. “Invasions,” she said, “often start with ‘technical’ projects that justify the presence of operatives and ‘technical experts’ who are also doing recon and advance prep.”
The Greenlandic government ultimately said it “would not be proportionate” to order Greenland Energy to remove the drilling equipment, a decision that The Guardian said underscored the difficult position facing its officials.
“They could grant permission for oil drilling, even though the planned wells appear to fall within a conservation area protected by the Ramsar convention on wetlands,” the report explained. “Or they could refuse and, some worry, give Trump a pretext to advance his imperialist agenda.”
Although the project has not been approved, a Greenland Energy representative said a vessel carrying additional drilling equipment would depart Canada in September, with drilling set to begin in October.
Jessica Berlin, a senior fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis, warned that allowing the equipment to remain would signal weakness that Trump could exploit.

On 10 June, a snowy-haired American in his 60s addressed the residents of a remote Greenland hamlet. He was there to tell them about a business venture supported by figures linked to Donald Trump. “So,” Robert Price said via an interpreter, “we have a project to drill for oil here.”
The Texas oil company that Price represents, Greenland Energy, hopes to prove that billions of barrels of crude lie underground by bringing in 300 shipping containers of drilling kit.
“We have the permit to put the equipment on the land,” footage of the gathering in Ittoqqortoormiit shows Price saying. “And then we’ve filed our permits – pending approval – to drill.”
But Greenland’s resources ministry said that contrary to Price’s claim, there were “no actually active permissions for any exploration activity or permissions for preparations for these activities”.
The dispute threatens a showdown between the Trump-linked backers of Greenland Energy and the authorities in the vast, sparsely populated territory. Trump’s lieutenants are using the prospect of an American oil find in Greenland to bolster their case for an American takeover.
The US president’s special envoy to Greenland, the hard-right Louisiana governor, Jeff Landry, returned from a visit in May to declare on Fox News: “We need a deal. Greenland needs a deal. We could be – Greenland could be – exporting 2m barrels of oil a day right now.”Ya, sure, right into Trump’s personal pockets first, dregs to investors, clean-up and toxic air food and water we hang on Greenlanders
Landry, who says his task is to “make Greenland a part of the US”, added: “We could have those barrels on production within 10 months or so.”
Greenland Energy appears to be the only company making plans to drill in the territory. Despite seemingly not yet having permission, it has chartered an Arctic-going vessel to ferry its equipment 4,000km through icy waters to Greenland’s eastern coast.
Price, an energy industry veteran who has become the public face of the company, said the vessel would depart in two months, on 12 September, with drilling to begin in October. Halliburton, the giant Houston-based contractor once led by the former Republican vice-president Dick Cheney, will run the logistics.
Ever since Trump made his imperial desires for Greenland explicit, US business interests have been gaining footholds in its vast expanses. The ventures range from rare-earth minerals and hydroelectric power to bottling “luxury” spring water.
Greenlanders have watched nervously as Trump has exercised US military power and toyed with doing so in the Danish territory. The day after he sent special forces to snatch the leader of Venezuela, Trump said: “We do need Greenland, absolutely.” Trump cited oil as the reason the US needed to stamp its authority on Venezuela. The US has since extracted oil revenues of about $8bn with scant oversight.Right into Trump’s own pockets, after murdering about 100 to steal it, and illegally kidnap Maduro.
Arriving at this week’s Nato summit in Turkey, Trump renewed his call for the US to wrest control of Greenland from Denmark.
Among those alarmed is Avaaraq Olsen, the mayor of the region that covers the capital, Nuuk, and extends east across Jameson Land, where the oil drilling is planned. She said she was “so afraid” that Americans striking oil could align with Trump’s plans.
“We are like the most peaceful place on Earth,” she said. “And we have always lived in peace and harmony. And suddenly there is all these Americans trying to take over.”
Licence to drill
Greenland stopped issuing licences to explore for oil in 2021 after 50 years of fruitless drilling. “The environmental consequences of oil exploration and extraction are too great,” a minister said at the time.
But a handful of licences remained valid. They included some covering a chunk of Jameson Land, a region closer to London than to Washington. These licences belong to a company registered in the UK called 80 Mile.
It is those licences that Greenland Energy, formed last year and listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange in New York, is hoping to exploit by putting up $60m to drill two wells in exchange for a majority stake in the project.
Price has claimed that crude worth $1tn (£750bn) could lie beneath Jameson Land. “I believe it’s there,” he said during the meeting in Ittoqqortoormiit, a settlement of 300 people in Jameson Land. “The scientists believe that it’s there. But until we drill these wells, we don’t know.”
The wells are expected to be drilled in an area protected by the global Ramsar Convention to preserve wetlands. David Boertmann, an expert on Greenland’s birds, said the conservation zone hosts important numbers of barnacle geese and pink-footed geese as well as whimbrel, golden plover, Sabine’s gull and snowy owl, plus muskoxen. Oil exploration activities could threaten the birds’ habitat, Boertmann said.
Greenland Energy’s stock market filings make clear that its plans can go ahead only if Greenland’s government grants permission for drilling and for it to take a stake in any oil extraction that follows.
There are signs that the government may be reluctant to do so. Days after Price’s comments, Greenland’s minister for mineral resources, Múte B Egede, said he could “understand if citizens are concerned” about the project’s connections to Trump.
He added: “Activities cannot be carried out until the necessary permits have been granted. I must say again that the company’s statements to the public do not always reflect the actual situation.”
Greenland Energy declined to respond to questions from the Guardian. But Larry Swets, a financier who is one of Greenland Energy’s biggest shareholders and serves as executive chair, has acknowledged: “Our enthusiasm for the project led us to communicate in a way that created confusion about who is responsible for what in Greenland – and that benefited no one, least of all the local communities closest to the project.”
Trump connections
At the Ittoqqortoormiit meeting, one person asked whether Swets had “close relations with Trump”. Price replied: “Not that I know of.”
Social media posts by Swets’s wife appear to show that this year she visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club. Swets did not respond to questions about whether he had accompanied his wife to Trump’s Florida residence, which serves as a presidential court away from the White House.
Although Swets has said the oil project is “not related to American annexation”, Greenland Energy’s connections to the US president are growing, as the company amasses an eclectic array of Trump-linked backers.
In April, the Wall Street billionaire Kenneth Griffin bought 9% of Greenland Energy’s shares. Griffin is a Republican mega-donor and, despite criticising the Trumps’ self-enrichment, gave $1m towards the president’s second inauguration.
Then in June, a US Navy veteran, Carol Craig, joined Greenland Energy’s board. Sidus Space, the defence tech company she founded, is working on Trump’s Golden Dome missile defence system. Trump has said that controlling Greenland, home to the US armed forces’ space base at Pituffik, is a “vital” part of the Golden Dome plan.
The same month, Greenland Energy announced a deal with Phil McGraw’s Envoy Media. Better known as Dr Phil, the TV personality’s 20 years hosting a talkshow that spun out of Oprah Winfrey’s show made him a household name in the US.
McGraw spoke at a Trump rally in 2024. After Trump’s victory, McGraw “embedded” himself with ICE agents enforcing Trump’s immigration crackdown. His latest venture, a documentary series about Greenland Energy, will be broadcast on cable and social media and, according to the company, will “capture the mission of these modern-day wildcatters”.
Discussing the prospect of oil with Swets and Price in a YouTube curtain-raiser, McGraw says: “We’ve heard Trump talk about buying Greenland and everybody laughed, but actually there is some real value to Greenland.”
Days later, McGraw was in the Oval Office with Trump, saying how honoured he was to serve on the president’s Religious Liberty Commission. “Thank you very much, Phil,” Trump said. “I appreciate your support.”
Some Greenland Energy shareholders are hoping the president will show similar appreciation for its Arctic oil exploration. On a dedicated Telegram group, they discuss what might send the company’s stock price higher. Referring to a presidential plug for the company that could make them richer before a drop of oil has been drilled, they are hoping to secure what they are calling a “Trump pump”.

CALGARY — The promotional video shows a small creek trickling through a mossy patch in an otherwise brown, barren landscape, icebergs looming just offshore.
A petroleum engineer dips a hand into the stream, then takes a sniff.
“It smells like crude oil,” he says, grinning at the camera.
A small group of contractors and engineers were filmed as they joined veteran U.S. oilman Robert Price on a visit to Jameson Land, a remote peninsula about halfway up Greenland’s eastern coast. The short documentary is meant to showcase how Texas-based Greenland Energy Co. is preparing for a two-well exploration program set for later this year.
If the oil naturally seeping out of the ground is any indication, they could be looking at a gusher.
“It’ll be like the oilfields of the ’20s and ’30s and ’40s,” said Price, chief executive of newly formed firm Greenland Energy, in an interview.
“The pressure and the oil will actually come at you.”
Canadian companies
Canadian companies are playing key roles in the effort to tap what Price said could be one of the world’s largest oil basins. The drilling rig is courtesy of Stampede Drilling Inc., a Calgary-based outfit normally active across Alberta and Saskatchewan. Quebec City-based shipping firm Desgagnés is handling transport.
The prize could be enormous, to the tune of 13 billion barrels of gross oil, according to an independent estimate from energy consultancy firm Sproule ERCE. Price likens the potential to the Prudhoe Bay field in Alaska discovered some six decades ago and forming the state’s economic backbone since.
Price said that samples taken from Jameson Land show the oil is akin to the crude long produced further east, off the shores of the United Kingdom and Norway. North Sea oil is light, sweet and easy to refine. Its price benchmark, called Brent, has been trading well over US$100 per barrel recently, at a premium to West Texas Intermediate produced in the U.S.
“I’ve been in the oil and gas business a long time and I’ve been on many wells and when you smell that light sweet crude, it actually smells sweet,” said Price.
“The aroma’s amazing.”
‘Like playing Tetris’
The logistics of the upcoming drilling are mind-boggling, with equipment being hauled from Alaska, Denmark, Alberta and the other side of Greenland. Cargoes are being staged at the Port of Valleyfield west of Montreal and then shipped to the site.
“It’s like playing Tetris,” Price said, describing the precise way equipment needs to be loaded. “It’s a fairly massive operation.”
With war engulfing much of the Middle East and upending global oil markets, it’s easy to forget that a possible U.S. takeover of Greenland was in the geopolitical spotlight mere months ago.
Price said he does not see a U.S. annexation of the mostly self-governing Danish territory being on the table.
“We are focused on respecting the Greenlandic people, their culture, their independence and doing what our part is in helping them become more independent and revenue-generating,” he said, adding that interactions with local regulators have been positive.
Price said a resource boom could help the population — 56,000 people, mostly Inuit — become less economically reliant on Denmark.
“People that I’ve talked to in Greenland, they want to know if they have one of the largest oilfields in the world.”
But the exploration would be happening five years after the Greenland government declared “the future does not lie in oil” and banned new oil and gas exploration.
The land Greenland Energy plans to drill in is under licences belonging to its joint-venture partner, U.K.-based 80 Mile PLC, that predate the 2021 policy, so they are still valid.
The first well is expected to take 30 days to complete. A well of a similar depth in Alberta would take about a week, Price said.
“Because we’re in the Arctic Circle, because this is the first well ever drilled in the basin, we’re going to take our time, we’re gonna go slow” he said.
Stampede Drilling
For an American businessman looking to tap Greenland oil, Price has been spending a lot of time in Canada — specifically Calgary and Montreal.
Stampede Drilling chief operating officer Terry Kuiper said the company was approached about a year ago about joining the project.
Greenland would be the first international foray for Stampede, he said, though team members have worked abroad through previous jobs.
The company is preparing to bring one of its rigs to a yard south of Edmonton for modifications needed to accommodate the required spill prevention equipment. After that, it will be trucked to the Port of Valleyfield and then shipped to Greenland.
“We are really excited to be part of this,” said Kuiper. “There are not too many opportunities like this in North America, let alone globally.”
Stampede plans on having seven-worker crews situated in Greenland rotating through two 12-hour shifts. In Alberta, a rig would be crewed by five or six people, but the company is adding some redundancy given the remote conditions.
Montreal connection
Greenland Energy announced last month that it had entered into an agreement with Desgagnés to handle the marine transport.
Desgagnés has a 50-year history moving freight through harsh Arctic environments and its Far North exploits are featured in the CBC reality series “High Arctic Haulers.” It has operated in Greenland, though never at the scale of the upcoming project, said Etienne Duchesne, project manager in business development at Groupe Desgagnés Inc.
“The west coast of Greenland is much more developed in terms of facilities, and there’s more villages on the west coast than the east coast. The east coast is very exposed to weather conditions,” he said.
“In general, the Arctic is a very difficult area to navigate, but some places are worse than others. The east coast of Greenland is particularly difficult due to winds that can last for weeks in a row, large waves.”
The exploration team will have to be completely self-sufficient as they’ll be working in “complete, absolute wilderness,” said Duchesne. Everything they need — fuel, food, accommodations, lubricant for machinery and more — is being consolidated at the Port of Valleyfield.
It will be crucial to make sure every item from several different vendors is closely tracked. Duchesne expects the ship to be loaded some time in September, with the whole trip taking about a month.
The vessel will likely be the Miena Desgagnés multipurpose cargo ship, which has two cranes that can together lift 500 tons. It will anchor as close as possible to the drill site and the cargoes will be taken to shore by barge.
The delivery will be made to “a random beach” as opposed to an existing hamlet, village or industrial site, as is usually the case for Desgagnés’ work in Canada’s Far North, said Duchesne. So the ship’s superintendent will check out the location ahead of time to figure out how to best set up a staging area for unloading.
The ship is to fly a Canadian flag, with a Canadian crew — and employees are clamouring to be part of the Greenland mission, said Duchesne.
“It’s really an adventure.”
