This is a good day to talk about our southern neighbours and their revolution, not out of a desire to insult them on a day that should be full of hotdogs, bunting and fireworks, but because our history is shared and we too often let their version of events into our brains. 1/19

A lot of sensible Americans see Trump’s kingly behaviour as an affront to the memory of the noble patriots who established their republic 250 years ago. That makes sense if you think the revolution was good, and the founding fathers wise and just. 2/19

Ancestral Canadians did not think that, and I’m not sure we should think it now, because it is also our history, and the version the Americans tell is propagandistic and omits important things that puts the revolution in a different light. 3/19

250 years ago today, in Philadelphia, the rebels signed the Declaration of Independence, which contains these words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.” 4/19

Those words were written by Thomas Jefferson, a Virginia planter who did not recognize the inalienable rights of the children he fathered by his enslaved servant, Sally Hemmings. 5/19

Hemmings was the daughter and grandaughter of enslaved people who were impregnated by their owners. He started raping her (how could she consent?) when she was a teenager. This was all secret until some detective work by historian Annette Gordon-Reed. 6/19

Washington and Franklin were also enslavers. Here is an ad Washington placed when one of his slaves escaped to freedom. 7/19

That woman lived the rest of her life free, thankfully, and so did other Washington and Jefferson slaves who the British took to Nova Scotia, infuriating the first president. 8/19

Should we take seriously the revolutionaries talk about liberty, which our neighbours talk about to this day? It is to laugh. As English writer Samuel Johnson wrote: “How is it that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty among the drivers of Negroes?” 9/19

We should ignore all of that kind of talk and consider instead the real reason for the revolution: the desire to seize land that belonged to Indigenous people, which is not something our neighbours will talk about at their parties today. 10/19

At the time of the revolution, Europeans lived in a strip of land near the coast. Toronto did not yet exist. After the Seven Years war, when the British conquered New France, they were broke, so they wanted no more fighting. 11/19

In 1763, the British issued a royal proclamation recognizing Indigenous title to their land and drawing a line down the Appalachians, banning new settlement in the territory of the Shawnee and other Indigenous nations in what is now Ohio. 12/19

(The proclamation is still part of the Canadian constitutional order.) This was bad news for Washington, who claimed 20,000 acres of land belonging to Indigenous people. The Quebec Act of 1774 formalized the rule, which Washington had hoped was temporary. 13/19

That, more than a tax on tea, was the reason for the revolution. During the revolution, most Indigenous nations, who knew the Yanks wanted their land, sided with the British. The Americans attacked them. The image here is of the Gnadenhutten massacre. t.co/DvCASXwext 14/19

Let’s do some back of the envelope math

… They say they’re going to launch 100,000 lbs worth of explosives. Based on some conversions I could find online that’s equal to about 50 tons of TNT. For reference the MOAB (mother of all bombs) has an explosive equivalence of about 11 tons of TNT.

So the people that can’t handle basic carpentry think they are going to safely detonate the equivalent of five MOABs worth of explosives in our capital and everything’s going to go well?
