Bruce Johnson was 57 years old. He’d lived with severe mental health challenges since he was 10 years old. 10. For nearly 5 decades he navigated a world that isn’t built for people like him. For almost 30 years he received AISH which is Alberta’s disability support program and with it, he survived.
Survived. Not thrived. Survived.
AISH paid $1,940 a month. Statistics Canada’s poverty line for a single person in a city like Calgary or Edmonton sits above $2,200 a month. That means the maximum disability payment in the province (the ceiling, not the floor) leaves recipients living below the poverty line.
Bruce Johnson was not living comfortably. He was clinging to the edge.
Then the Alberta government sent him a letter.
Beginning July 1, he’d be moved from AISH to a new program called the Alberta Disability Assistance Program, or ADAP. His monthly support would drop by $200, to $1,740. And he might be required to participate in employment programs and job searches, or risk losing support entirely. No increase for cost of living, instead the exact opposite.
So he was a man who’d struggled with mental illness since childhood. A man who’d already tried employment and knew his limits. A man already living below the poverty line who was now told he would receive less, and be expected to do more to keep it.
Bruce Johnson wrote back. To the government, to media, to advocates. He tried reaching out to anyone who might care enough to listen.
“The Alberta Government kicked me in the teeth with the introduction of ADAP,” he wrote.
“Just something that has finally pushed me to end everything.”
On June 8, RCMP responded to a fatal fire at a home in the Village of Empress. It was Bruce Johnson’s home.
The government’s response was a press release.
In it, Minister Nathan Neudorf expressed his condolences. He declined an on-camera interview. His statement didn’t acknowledge any connection between Bruce Johnson’s death and the policy changes that Bruce Johnson himself named as the reason he could not go on.
Premier Smith was conveniently unavailable. Her office referred media to the Ministry
A man who was desperate wrote to his government. He told them exactly what their policy was doing to him. And when he was gone, they hid behind a spokesperson and called it a tragedy as if tragedies just happen, as if no one in power made the decisions that led here.
Now look at the latest example of where this government chooses to spend.
On October 19, 2026, Alberta will hold a referendum. Administering this referendum is projected to cost taxpayers up to $100mm.
And yet there is $200 less a month for Bruce Johnson and others in his same situation.
This isn’t a budget miscalculation. This isn’t a tragic oversight. This is a choice. It’s a deliberate declaration of who matters and who does not.
He isn’t alone.
Larysa Armstrong, a Calgary woman about to transition to ADAP, says her household will lose approximately $460 a month as of August. She said: “There are a lot of people who are afraid. This person who passed isn’t alone. There are other people who are in despair just like him.”
Elaine Lee, another Calgary recipient: “That’s actually how I feel. Like a dead end.”
When pressed about community consultations, recipients say simply: “Nobody asked us. Nobody asked for the change.”
The government claims it consulted the disability community. It cannot or will not say with who.
Smith and her Nazi “christian” separatist UCP lie a lot. We are not bystanders. We are concerned citizens.
I’m writing this because Bruce Johnson had a voice and he used it, and no one in power listened. The people who will be hurt by this transition on July 1 are people who are already exhausted from fighting to be seen. They shouldn’t have to fight alone.
We can be bystanders. We can scroll past this, feel briefly sad, and go about our day. Or we can be engaged citizens and people who understand that a government’s budget is a moral document, and that silence in the face of injustice is its own kind of moral answer.
The ADAP transition is weeks away. There’s still time.
Please. Call your MLA. Write to Minister Nathan Neudorf at the Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services. Write to the Premier. Tell them you know what Bruce Johnson wrote. Tell them you are watching. Tell them that a government willing to spend $100 million on a separatist referendum while cutting disability supports below the poverty line does not get to call itself a government that protects its people. Hell start a petition – because they clearly listen to those.No, they don’t, they only listen to separatist petitions and shit Americans who want to destroy Canada to fill their own fucking pockets, like these fuckers below.
Bruce Johnson told them. They chose not to listen.

The poll just talks to Calgarians.
Yes, Calgary. Battleground Calgary. The separatists have to start picking up support in Calgary.
Those Calgarians wanting to remain in Canada. 74 per cent. Three out of four.
Those wanting the Alberta government to do what it takes to get to a Yes/No vote on Alberta independence.
19 per cent. One in five.And, if those poor souls could be unbrainwashed, I bet all would vote No.
The rest are unsure.
Those of us thought there would be more of a fight by now, especially after a campaign where Albertans lined up in the cold to sign a petition wanting a vote on leaving Canada.
It was national, no, international news.
So we wait. There are many more rounds in this bout.
For the curious, in this poll the highest support for the remain in Canada side is 81 per cent in southeast Calgary.
There is another question in the poll on Calgary and Alberta separatism.
Recently, Mayor Jeromy Farkas has spoken out against Alberta separatism. The mayor fears political uncertainty will drive investment away and hurt the city.
I remember one individual challenging Farkas.
“If your loyalty is to Canada, move out of Alberta to prove it, Jeromy. Stop campaigning against the best interests of Calgarians and Albertans.”
Those polled are asked if they approve or disapprove of Farkas speaking out on this issue.
Strongly or somewhat approve. 71 per cent. Seven out of ten.

Now, as expected, the Smith government has appointed a panel to oversee a report on how much it will cost if Alberta leaves Canada.

Martha Hall Findlay, the director, was quick to say: “While the panel will offer input, the school will retain full and independentNazi American Repuglican Project 2025 (inhumane) “Christian” Polluter control over the final report.”
But what happens next?
It needs to be renamed “The School of Climate Science Denialism & Lies, Pro Polluter, Pro American, Anti-Canada Propaganda Policy, Serving the Rich, notably Koch Bros.”
Dr. Jack Mintz, panel leader and no stranger to the policy school, said: “After the report is completed, the advisory panel will review the findings and deliver an independent deeply corrupt and Pro Nazi American Pro Pedophile Anti Environment, AntiScience, Anti Canada, Anti Democracy fascist racist filled written assessment.”
Obviously, the panel might not agree with everything in the report.
Then the kicker.
“This approach will allow for further and potentially differing views to be shared, ensuring Albertans arelied to and brainwashed enough to scream for Nazi USA to destroy Canada and steal Alberta’s riches via pretending 51st State, leaving separatists and Albertans starving in the streets, home and country-less to reward them for their traitorous service equipped with all the facts.”
At the very end, it appears, separatists will get their say and perhaps influence the final review. The facts will become yet another collection oflies, more lies and ignorant hate-filled opinions.
As for the panel, it’s carefully constructed not to offend separatists.
Mintz is a longtime conservative adviser and ardent critic of Ottawa policy.

Morton was one of six who signed the 2001 firewall letter, which was controversial at the time but now reads like another day around the water cooler in Smith’s office.
A 2020 book, co-edited by Morton, Mintz and Tom Flanagan, said: “None of us favour separation as a first option. But we also see it as a viable last resort if all else fails.”
The other panellists are Adam Legge, president of the business council of Alberta; Alex Pourbaix, Cenovus board chair; and Janice McKinnon, former Saskatchewan finance minister.
Earlier, McKinnon’s report on UCP government finances launched cost-cutting and propelled private medicine.
Legge has consistently said separatism will hurt Alberta business. Pourbaix, sticking mainly to his industry job, has been quiet about separatism.
Smith has constructed a panel that won’t offend the separatists but might give pause to federalists. The thinking seems to be that if this group comes up with huge costs of leaving Canada, the separatists might actually listen.
So, how to improve the credibility of this study on the true costs of separation?
Disband the panel before it even starts. Go with the public policy school’s expert study, whatever it comes up with.
Albertans would at least have confidence that the report deals only with the facts, not the politics.

Two unelected leaders guiding the pro-Canada and Alberta independence sides, leading to a fall referendum on the issue, rarely agree on anything.
But Jeffrey Rath of the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) and Thomas Lukaszuk take similar views on the five-member Calgary School of Public Policy panel recruited by the UCP government to assess the economic impacts of transitioning to a breakaway Alberta — that it favours the independenceserve Nazi USA , betray Canada and steal from Canadians to fucking do it viewpoint.
“It’s like she basically appointed a panel of firewall signatories,” said Lukaszuk, who leads the Forever Canadian campaign to foil separatist aspirations.
The so-called firewall letter, published in 2001 and co-signed by political scientist Ted Morton, advocated for greater Alberta autonomy and called for the province to depart from Canada on issues such as pensions, policing, taxation, health care, and Senate reform — many stances taken by the UCP government.
Morton’s presence on the assessment panel, said Lukaszuk, is emblematic of the body’s likely leanings.

Lukaszuk said the panel’s $1.5 million cost, when combined with the estimated price tag of the referendum could amount to $95 million, enough to build three elementary schools.
“Smith just had (the Alberta Next) panel travel Alberta and none of the (October referendum) questions can be implemented by the provincial government anyway,” he said.
Priddis-area lawyer Rath, who’s been an outspoken advocate for Alberta independence, mocked Smith for the choice of panel members, repeating the often-heard accusation she’s straddling both sides of the debate. And in this case, she’s favouring his team, he added.

“These guys are on our side — we’re pretty confident they will confirm our Value of Freedom document.”
That document says Alberta independence would save the new country about $70 billion, money that would no longer be sent to Ottawa and incur one-time setup costs of no more than $5.7 billion.
Earlier this month, Smith said transitioning to an independent Alberta could cost $400 billion, a figure Rath has called ridiculous, but a number of economists have called the APP’s numbers untenable or incomplete.
Smith defends panel
On the Corus radio show Your Province, Your Premier on Saturday, a text caller expressed concern the panel would favour Alberta independence.
Smith pushed back, saying the group was chosen to objectivelythere she goes lying again.
