The tariffs against Canada are not about fentanyl. They raise new taxes (from US raisins) to finance his tax cuts.
DOGE is not about efficiency. It’s about cutting some spending to finance tax cuts for the rich.
That’s why he keeps saying there is nothing Canada can do to forestall the tariffs. (The fentanyl threat is his use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, passed in 1977, not enforced since)

This great perfidy from our longstanding and close ally and friend is immensely saddening and maddening.
But it also makes me resolute to defend our country. We should and must retaliate.
A thread about what I’ll be looking for in our retaliation measures….
1) Eyes on the goal: the goal is to get the tariffs removed. Take actions that lead to that goal.
If you don’t think fighting is needed, get the hell out of the foxhole and let someone worthy take your place.
2) Leave no one behind: We need to be united. That means we support those people/regions/industries who are hurt. In hand with that, we should expect words and actions of solidarity from everyone.
3) Ensure they know: we need to see big effort to ensure US consumers/biz know the impact this self-imposed tax will have on their lives.
The own-impact of the US tariff far outweighs the impact of our retaliation. So make sure they know it.
4) Not just trade: this is not a standard trade war; it’s just bullyism. Not tit for tat or dollar for dollar tariffs. Those are 3-word slogans. Think broader than trade.
Hit them hard but strategically. Uranium? Germanium? Alaska access? Tesla? Put it all on the table.
5) Hurt them: the goal is to inflict economic and political pain. Yes, actions will hurt us too and possibly more than it hurts them. That’s why wars are bad. But war is upon us.
The point is to hurt them enough to change their action.
6) Build allies: we are smaller. Colombia and Denmark are small. If we are picked off one by one, we risk losing.
I want to see that our retaliation involves lining up ally support.
7) Complementary policies: we’ve heard lots of “pivot to long-run growth” strategies discussed, from inter-prov trade barriers to corp tax cuts to removing Canadian labeling on products.
Sure we can discuss: but these are complements not *substitutes” for retaliation.
8) Support those hurt: We should prepare supports. The biggest estimates of this shock are about 1/10th the size of the Covid shock. (That’s still big, but the “they’re doing a new CERB” hyperventilating is silly.)
I expect to see easier EI access for displaced workers. …
This is going to be tough, but always remember the resolve of the Architect…
