It is a feckless, bewildering, totally unnecessary position. It should call into question the prime minister’s supposed belief in the “prohibition of the use of force, except when consistent with the UN Charter,” as he told the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this year.
Carney’s statement does not even make a boilerplate call for de-escalation. Instead, it cheerleads America “acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security.”
That is a painfully naive and obsequious statement which blindly accepts an entirely unconvincing casus belli.
The rest of the liberal world has managed to thread this needle. A joint statement from United Kingdom, France and Germany did not endorse Trump’s war, while other European leaders urged de-escalation. Spain’s prime minister went so far as to say he “rejects the unilateral military action of the United States and Israel.”

Despite extolling people to take to the streets it does not seem Trump’s operation has done much to weaken the tools of state coercion which have put down unrest. The Iranian state has warned its citizens to remain indoors, and state forces were quickly deployed to patrol the streets and quell any attempts to instigate revolution.
The Pentagon itself told Trump this. Both the Wall Street Journal and Axios have reported in recent days that General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned Trump that attacking Iran risked overtaxing the American military, depleting its reserve of air defence munitions, sucking America into another protracted conflict — and that it might not work. Quoting a source, Axios reported that the general, who is close to Trump, is a “reluctant warrior” on Iran.
While it is far too soon to know the full consequences of this war, initial reports suggest that America and Israel failed to attain their main operational aims. The airstrikes may have killed the 86-year-old Khamenei, but they did little to hinder Iran’s ability to launch waves of attacks against Israel, Jordan, and the metropolises on the Arabian Peninsula. The scale of Iran’s response far exceeds what they unleashed last year.
Worse yet, America has no plan for a post-Ayatollah Iran, and these strikes risk solidifying the regime’s hold on power — as they have in the past. These are all — or should be — fundamental, non-negotiable, red-line Canadian national interests. And yet the prime minister — who in Davos mocked other countries for going along to get along — doesn’t even mention them, can’t bring any nuance to a potentially world-defining conflict.
In Davos, Carney argued that only countries w/ strong economies could afford “principled” foreign policies. Carney’s pro-US, pro-illegal war statement is that idea in action.
The thing is, this view is both self-serving and wrong. Wrong because there is always a cost to standing up for principles.
I think a lot of people read “principles” as just sanctimoniously lecturing other countries about human rights. But it actually covers any normative position, including sovereignty, the value of multilateralism, the evils of war crimes, and the need for international law. All principles.
But if you always subordinate principles (i.e., non-economic interests like international law) to economic growth, you’ll never stand for anything.
ESPECIALLY Canada, since the best we can hope for is only sending HALF of our exports to the US. They will ALWAYS have leverage over us.
Translation: Canada can never afford independent policies.
But that’s not how principles work in domestic or international politics. If something’s important enough, you do it and take the hit.
What we’ve seen from Carney over the past year is that there is literally nothing — not the rule of law, not his word as PM (remember his betrayal of Elizabeth May?), not climate change — that he places above economic growth.
Not only is this anti-principles view wrong, Carney’s assertion that only some economies can afford principled foreign policies is also self-serving. It provides cover for Carney’s own policies. Which aren’t borne of hard-headed realpolitik, but of the selective implementation of Carney’s values.
All foreign policies are principled. In pretending that India no longer poses a threat to Canadians, in ignoring Musk’s CSAM adventures, in fully endorsing Trump’s illegal actions, Carney is demonstrating his own values and principles, what he actually stands for. And what he doesn’t.
If you want to know why I’ve consistently argued that Mark Carney isn’t really intent on increasing Canadian independence from the US, look no further than this statement. Carney fans desperately rationalizing his support for Trump’s illegal and immoral war.
US-Israeli air strikes killed at least 85 people at a girls’ school in southern Iran, Iran’s judiciary said. The state-run IRNA news agency reported the strike happened in Minab in Iran’s Hormozgan province. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard has a base in the city.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reported strike.
The US and Israel launched an attack early Saturday on Iran, with the first apparent strike happening near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose whereabouts remain unknown. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was also targeted.
Iranian media reported strikes nationwide and smoke could be seen rising from the capital.

Most importantly, don’t treat this as any other U.S. war. This is an extension of a domestic political scandal—and the fact that Trump and Kushner are said in the Epstein Files to primarily be Israeli agents or assets with Saudi/UAE business ties to protect. And now “Trump Gaza.”
It’s horrifying, so I don’t say it lightly: US soldiers and Iranian kids are dying for nothing. America wasn’t in danger from Iran in 2026. What Trump is doing is protecting his Israeli patrons, his Saudi/UAE golf courses and “Trump Gaza.” And he’s known this is coming for years.
The failure of US corporate media to properly cover the Epstein Scandal as a geopolitical scandal encompassing Russia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Israel, Bahrain, Egypt, and Qatar is now inevitably making it impossible for the same outlets to understand that this war is fraudulent.
