Carney’s middle-class tax cut plan ignores single Canadians by Rodney Beatty, May 28, 2025, The Globe and Mail
Rodney Beatty is a writer and former business leader based in Sarnia, Ont.
When I heard Prime Minister Mark Carney announce that his government’s first order of business would be a middle-class tax cut, I paused. Not out of cynicism, but out of hope. Humans need to stop their addiction to hope. I am sure it helps endure the hell that is humanity, but, hope is why we are killing earth’s livability. Hope feeds greed and endless “growth” which demands more and more and more humans to create that growth, and more and more believing some day, we “hope” there will be a technological fix like carbon capture (proven to suck away mega $billions to keep the rich getting richer andlet industry make more pollution than it removes – just another tech con to keep the rich getting richer while destroying more and more life on earth). And, most evilly, hope lets us believe we need not do anything to protect our homes, communities, environment, rights and democracy, ’cause we hope others will.
Maybe this was finally the moment someone in Ottawa would acknowledge people like me.
But as I listened closer, that hope gave way to something familiar: a sense that I was invisible in a system I still help fund.
I’m a single Canadian. I live alone. I pay taxes, and like millions of others, I carry the full cost of housing, groceries, utilities, insurance – without the benefit of a dual income or child-related tax credits. The new tax cut may ease pressure for some households. But for people like me? The needle barely moves.I am in lowest income group. We get nothing from Harper-Con Carney’s “cuts” except the massive cuts in services ahead to finance the tax cuts for those that do not need it and likely the final death cut to Canada’s public health care – Harper’s golden goal that he failed to fulfill while in power.
Carney’s plan will lower the tax rate for the first personal income bracket by 1 per cent for 22 million Canadians. It’s being framed as broad-based relief. But broad doesn’t mean equitable. And when you already live on the margins of what the tax system rewards, a one per cent cut doesn’t address the imbalance – it reinforces it.
Here’s what I mean.
A married couple earning a combined $72,000 often pays less tax than a single person earning the same amount alone. Why? Because they can split income, reduce their taxable amount and access benefits that singles can’t.Con gov’ts, especially religious con gov’ts like Harper’s and Carney’s, don’t want singles, they want baby makers, white Christian obedient ignorant baby makers – a gross way to escalate destroying earth’s livability.
Meanwhile, a single taxpayer earning that $72,000 covers every expense themselves, and gets no additional consideration in return.
Turns out the July federal tax cut has some fine print attached to it
We’re not talking about a niche group. Nearly one-third of Canadian households are made up of single individuals. Yet tax policy continues to reflect an idealized religious “go forth and multiple”
version of family life that leaves millions of us shouldering more, while qualifying for less.
I’ve lived alone most of my life. The recent hits to municipalities by Alberta’s evil premier, quisling queen Danielle Smith, caused property tax increases to help finance her rich pals’ kids in private schools for which she’s taking public money away from ordinary kids’ education in typical Harper con fashion. Even making poverty level income, I have no problem paying full share for school taxes on my property taxes, but I do mind that money being stolen by corrupt politicians from ordinary Alberta kids to be given to rich kids that don’t need it.
A single senior home owner pays same amount of school tax – even if we have no kids – as couples do. That’s unfair especially after decades of paying school taxes while watching raping churches pay zero taxes – typical in religious led/controlled gov’ts like Canada. FFS. It’s the year 2025. Humans are knowledgeable enough by now about life, we do not need to be run by religions, especially not religions pimping endless growth at the expense of life on earth. If earth was treated as tenderly as rape religions are, we would not be watching the destruction of a livable climate caused by our gross over population and pollution.
Earlier this year, I proposed a modest change: Increase the basic personal amount – the portion of your income that’s exempt from federal income tax – for single Canadians.Excellent fair and reasonable change.
I suggested raising it to 150 per cent of the standard amount. It wasn’t meant to punish couples or families.
It was meant to recognize that fairness isn’t just about how much you give back. It’s about who’s still not being seen.
I shared this idea with my local Conservative MP, Marilyn Gladu, who represents Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong. She wrote back, calling it “well thought out.” That was encouraging. But encouragement doesn’t stretch across the grocery store checkout or the monthly rent. Encouragement doesn’t pay for heat.
This isn’t about political sides. I don’t care what party you vote for. But I do care when the very first move of a new government – the signal moment meant to define its values – reinforces a system that already excludes so many.
I’m glad families will save a little. But I hope someone on Parliament Hill – maybe someone in Carney’s very large cabinet – remembers that the “middle class” includes people who eat dinner alone, too.and, there’s the lowest income class, taken advantage of for slave labour and or ignored, with rape religions silent about it.

This below is what Harper and Harper-Con Carney support!
@Sa-hi5nq:
Using religion to commit heinous crimes.Long past time to ban rape-enabling religious texts, notably the misogynistic bible.
Each individual is responsible for his own actions.
One day justice will prevail.
@atilaatik7304:
Briings to mind the blood soaked mattresses under a New York Synagogue.
@SagTahir:
im not surprised it is in their teachings
@BadgerMcblasty:
It’s a haven, the “Times of Israel” and “Jerusalem Post” have written articles on the problem of these type of proclivities there.
@derdez1:
Brother it is not only in Israel. This happens by the elite that are in Polotics world wide.
@zei_squirrel:
of course Trump is an Epstein pedophile rapist. Elon Musk is right about that. But so is he, and so are all the other genocidal Zionist billionaire creeps that are hanging around him like Peter Thiel and Bill Ackman
ecomarxi:
Zionism is like a virus that has mutated the perfect defence mechanism. By falsely weaponising antisemitism accusations, it has ensured complete protection from the truth.

@ecomarxi:
Zionists rape and kill babies so freely because their ideology is based on the belief that they alone are chosen by God.
Supremacism has no place in a civilised society.
The fact they spend billions on propaganda tells you how crucially important controlling — and opposing — the narrative is
I’ve met some pretty terrible people in my life, but nothing prepared me for confrontation with despicable and depraved Zionists. I just don’t understand grown men gloating about thousands of dead children. How cowardly, how pathetic, how vile.
@ProudSocialist:
Elon is not on our side.
Trump is not on our side.
The Republicans are not on our side.
The Democrats are not on our side either.
The government and both parties exist to serve the rich and the war machine.Same in Canada and most other western “Christian” countries
Hope that helps.

do you guys understand that states are not material? states are not living things. they are concepts social constructed to consolidate power over land.
no state—not a single one—has an imperative right to exist; people have a right to exist on their native lands.
