Chief Billy-Joe Tuccaro of the Mikisew Cree First Nation didn’t mince words Wednesday night.
“You can’t trust Danielle Smith,” he wrote in a statement released within hours of the Premier’s televised address. “She’s a traitor and a separatist.”
There it is. Plain and unambiguous. From the Chief of a Treaty 8 Nation that participated in two Court of King’s Bench cases — Justice Feasby’s ruling last December that a separation referendum question would be unconstitutional, and Justice Leonard’s ruling last week that the entire petition process should never have been issued. Two courts, and two losses for the Alberta government. And the Mikisew Cree still weren’t consulted. Still weren’t invited to the table. Not even once.
So here’s what happened: In a pre-recorded address Thursday evening, Premier Danielle Smith announced she is adding a separation question to the October 19 provincial referendum ballot. The question Albertans will be asked: “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”
Smith was careful with her framing. She said she supports Alberta remaining in Canada — that is how she will personally vote. But let’s be clear about what she actually did: she took a court ruling that said this entire process was illegal — that it violated Treaty rights — and walked around it. Smith pointed to roughly 700,000 Albertans signing petitions on both sides of the issue as justification, and said she would not allow “a legal mistake by a single judge” to silence their voices.She’s a fucking liar. The more than 400,000 Albertans that signed the Forever Canada petition, myself included, signed for a vote in the leg, and to prevent a fucking money and time wasting, polluting referendum (Smith’s questions mostly farm rage and hate against non whites). And, it’s highly doubtful the lying thieving separatists got 200,000 signatures, never mind 300,000. A legal mistake by a single judge. Yeah, that’s what she called it.
Justice Leonard found that Elections Alberta made a serious error when it approved the separation petition without considering prior court findings establishing that Alberta independence would violate Treaty rights. The Crown had a duty to consult with First Nations. That duty was not optional. It didn’t happen. As I reported last week, the separatists had claimed upwards of 300,000 signatures — unverified — and the judge threw them out anyway. The courts agreed with what First Nations have been saying all along: you cannot slice a province away from Canada, redraw international borders through the heart of Treaty territory, and not once pick up the phone.There were other reasons to J Leonard’s ruling, one being that Smith (or a separatist lawyer) fucked up when she rewrote her Bill 14, trying to piss her way around the first court ruling. The only person to blame for the court rulings, is liar Smith, and she fucking well knows it, so she’s punishing everyone else to divert her having to point her own fingers at her stupid enormous ego’d ass.
Smith announced her government would be appealing Leonard’s ruling to the Supreme Court of Canada if necessary. “But this process will take many months and possibly years before being addressed by those higher courts,” she said. “In the meantime, under our legal system, this troubling court decision is binding law in Alberta until it is successfully appealed.”
Binding law. Her words. And then she added a referendum question anyway.Smith is like Trump, she doesn’t give a shit about anyone or anything but herself. Rule of law does not affect her, the fucking separatists think same cruel selfish stupidity.

The reactions from Treaty Nations were swift, coordinated, and furious.
The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) — Chief Allan Adam’s Nation, which has been fighting this in the courts alongside Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation and the Blackfoot Confederacy — issued a statement demanding the province immediately halt any move toward a separation referendum. ACFN noted it submitted a detailed brief to Premier Smith and Cabinet back on May 1st outlining the profound impacts this referendum would have on Treaty rights, Indigenous mobility, and the Treaty relationship itself. Alberta did not respond. ACFN was not invited into any discussions, including the so-called “Select Special Citizen Initiative Proposal Review Committee” — despite court rulings confirming that consultation is legally required before any of this moves forward.
“The courts have already spoken clearly. Consultation is required. Yet no consultation has occurred,” said Chief Adam. “The Government of Alberta cannot simply ignore the Constitution, ignore Treaty rights, and ignore the courts because it finds those obligations inconvenient. Cabinet is not above the law.” Chief Adam has been saying something like this for months. When I spoke with him in April, after First Nations completed legal arguments in Edmonton, he described Ottawa’s growing handover of federal environmental oversight to the province as handing over the condemned. “While Ottawa sleeps, Alberta’s first inhabitants are doing everything we can to save Confederation,” he said at the time.Canadians need to accept that Carney is as evil a traitor as Danielle Smith and her separatists. He’s enabling Smith, every fucking step of the way.

The Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations condemned the referendum push outright, calling it confirmation that Albertans are living under a separatist regime. They invoked the Feasby and Leonard decisions — two Court of King’s Bench rulings — as proof that Treaty Rights cannot be set aside.
And they called out something that is now impossible to ignore: the silence from Ottawa.
“First Nations are once again carrying the burden of defending the Constitution of Canada while the Government of Canada remains silent,” the Confederacy wrote. They are calling directly on the federal government to step up and fulfil its duty to protect Treaty Rights, the rule of law, and the Constitution. “This is a Treaty matter,” they wrote, “and this unacceptable silence and inaction dishonour the Treaty relationship.”
Carney’s a racist, a lying con who hates Canada’s charter and the rights of Canadians like Harper and Smith do. He’s made that clear repeatedly. He’s giving Canada away to fucking Nazi USA. Carney othewise would not have stripped First Nations of their rights, and all Canadians too, with his disgusting Bill C-5 immediately after he conned liberal and NDP voters to vote for Harper2. The 14 liberal MPs who wrote a feeble letter to Carney – “We remain deeply concerned; the government’s credibility will be seriously compromised” (WTF? “Will be?” Carney lost all credibility last year with Bill C-5, so did every “Liberal.”) need to cross the fucking floor to the NPD or sit as independants. Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta, under Grand Chief Trevor Mercredi, called on Smith to “change course, cease and desist on any separation referendum process.” They warned that proceeding without meaningful consultation risks serious social and economic consequences — increased tensions, misinformation, political division, and instability — at a time when nation-to-nation dialogue is critically important. They reminded anyone who needed reminding that Treaty No. 8 is a solemn constitutional agreement between First Nations and the Crown that cannot be ignored, diminished, or bypassed through unilateral provincial action.
Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation — a Treaty 8 Nation, one of the three that took this fight to court in the first place — issued the shortest statement and maybe the most piercing. “Albertans are now seeing Danielle Smith’s government for what it is: undemocratic, authoritarian, and willing to bend to the whims of a loud, angry minority.”
They ended with a call: “It is time others join us in fighting for our rights, the rule of law, and a functioning democracy.”
For about a year now, I’ve been covering this separatist push and the First Nations fighting it — in the streets, in the legislature, in the courts. I covered the protests. I reported on the legal arguments. I spoke with Chief Adam when he came out of that Edmonton courtroom in April. Every step of the way, the Nations doing this work have been proven right. The courts have backed them up — twice. And every step of the way, the Alberta government has found a new way to push forward regardless.Smith has her marching orders (from Nazi USA), and she’s far too racist to give a fuck about FN, their Treaties, or their rights (or the rights of the rest of Albertans and Canadians in other provinces). I wish there was a word in the English language for something at once deeply consequential and profoundly silly. I don’t know how else to describe what’s going on in Alberta right now. It’s a national unity crisis and it’s incredibly stupid. It would be funny if it wasn’t so serious — like a pratfall in a clown car driving a trailer full of babies off a cliff.
On Thursday night, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith gave a televised address that was at once historic and absurd. In a brief speech, she laid out her government’s plan to have a referendum this October about having a referendum about Alberta leaving Canada somewhere down the line.
Smith looked rather pleased with herself as she delivered this news. And why not. She had been caught in something of a bind, after all, and if her referendum referendum wasn’t the most elegant solution — it has, in fact, all the subtly of a nine-year-old trying to trick their parents into more screen time — it was a solution, at least to Smith’s own narrow political woes.
Because make no mistake: What Smith announced Thursday wasn’t about federalism. It wasn’t about the energy industry, or Justin Trudeau or Alberta getting a better deal. It was about Smith’s own political survival.
The activists who installed Smith as leader of Alberta’s United Conservative Party (UCP) desperately want a referendum on Alberta independence. If Smith didn’t find some way to give them one, it’s very likely they would have tried to push her from office before the next provincial election. And given the hold the separatists have over the UCP — and Alberta’s recent history of going through premiers the way Henry VIII went through wives — the odds are better than even they would have succeeded.
So, Smith is giving them their vote, sort of. The question Albertans will be posed in October is this: “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”
Give her points for originality, at least. Even Quebec’s separatists never put a multiple choice question on the ballot. But Smith’s question isn’t meant to be elegant.
It’s designed to be an end-run around the courts and the rights of Alberta’s First Nations.
Last week, a federal judge ruled that an independence petition circulated by a group called Stay Free Alberta that aimed to put a straightforward yes-or-no vote on separation on the ballot was unconstitutional on multiple grounds. (The Crown, for one, had failed in its duty to consult the province’s Indigenous Peoples.)
In her address Thursday, Smith called that ruling “a legal mistake” that “interferes with the democratic rights of hundreds of thousands of Albertans.” She vowed to appeal, but also said she was asking her government to put her own, decidedly not straightforward, question on the ballot right way.Wasting how many millions of dollars when many Alberta kids are going hungry. “Kicking the can down the road only prolongs a very emotional and important debate,” she said as she launched a process that will kick the can down the road, prolonging a very emotional and important debate that could, in the long run, break up Canada, destroy Alberta as an economic powerhouse, and empower the conspiracy-minded extremists who are driving the independence debate.
Smith took pains Thursday to stress that she is not herself a separatist. She said she plans to vote no in the referendum on having a referendum.
But if that’s true, she has a funny way of showing it.
Smith has done everything legally and politically possible to allow the separatists in her base to have their way. She lowered the threshold for launching a referendum. She used legislation to quash one court challenge to the referendum process, had her government intervene in another and now, having lost in court, she is launching what may be the world’s first wink-wink-nudge-nudge referendum by putting a question about a question instead of just a question on the ballot.
That’s what makes all this look so incredibly self-serving and cynical. She is a federalist who is going to extreme lengths to give separatists a referendum she opposes and says she will campaign against. She is risking the future of her country, not out of some deeply held principle, but because she thinks that’s the best way to keep her job. I don’t think Smith gives a shit about her job, she loves and is addicted to cruelty, power and lying. She’s a lot like liar con man sadist kid rapist abuser Trump. I believe she’s betrayed Canada and Canadians to to the Nazi Trump regime in exchange for power and money, thinking she’ll become Governor of the State of Alberta. That’s why she’s become loudly fake christian, helps feed the rage and hate in the members in her christian flock. She’s insane with lust for power and greed for fame, like her separatists and orange hero. Since the first time she came up to try to charm me at an AER event when it was EUB, I’ve seen Smith as a vicious selfish despicable fucker with her hideous fake cemented hateful smile, and eager Nazi, as is her enabler and partner in crime, Mark Carney.
