THERE has been a sense of relief these past few days from Palestinians and their allies thanks to the long-awaited ceasefire agreement.
While many questions remain unanswered, and concerns continue to be expressed over the White House peace plan set to be imposed on Gaza, the world has – to paraphrase Husam Zomlot at SNP conference – come to its senses and pushed Netanyahu to stop the relentless violence.
It is important to say, though, that is not the time to turn our eyes away from Palestine.
UN experts have said that the recovery of Gaza could take generations, with displaced Palestinians returning set to face not just the physical challenges of life there, but the emotional trauma.
“The psychological impacts and trauma are profound,” the UN special rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, told Al Jazeera this weekend. “It’s like another Nakba.”
The ceasefire is not the end. It is, however, the time to look at how this devastation has been allowed to take place.
Over the last two years, the western media has failed to properly hold Israel to account.
Journalists have largely failed to scrutinise their own governments’ involvement. Many of the worst columnists and commentators have defended the actions of the Israeli state, while those afraid of the pro-Israel lobby’s complaints simply resorted to both-sides rhetoric.
So rarely have western audiences been given insight into the Israeli government’s motives for their bombardment of Gaza, beyond references to the horrific events of October 7 and general condemnation of Hamas.Ya, blaming Hamas for IOF’s mass murder of Israelis on Oct 7 via ordered Hannibal Directive, to justify genocide and enrage the world into gleefully supporting genocide.
Our front page today is a direct response to this failure.
In Israel, political leaders and media figures have spent years saying very explicitly what they want from their destruction of the Palestinian people. They have barely tried to hide their true intentions.
