When, on a tip, I looked into Faulkner, I QUICKLY found that his stories didn’t add up. He didn’t have the oil properties he claimed. He wasn’t an expert. His educational credentials were fake. He was a washed-up computer hacker and serial abuser of courts to silence critics.
When caught, he was at LAX with gold bars and a ticket to Lebanon, apparently trying to join his lawyer mom who had already made her escape. Now he’ll pay some penance.
But where is the regret, repentance, or attempt to make things right by the huge, powerful institutions that lent their credibility to this lying, stealing, ill-spirited, and obviously fake person? Who are the monsters being quoted today?
… One lesson for reporters and editors: if someone seems eager to talk to you, do extra due diligence. Any asshat can hire a PR firm and claim to be an expert. We’re all on deadline and we all need quotes, but in this case, reporters contributed directly to the scam.
Also, in this case, the first person who publicly voiced skepticism about Faulkner was @TXsharon….
