ALBERTA JUDICIAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED by Department of Justice Canada, June 24, 2011
The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Barbara L. Veldhuis, a judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta in Calgary, is appointed Judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta in Calgary, to replace Mr. Justice P.J. McIntyre, who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of April 23, 2011.
Madam Justice Veldhuis attended Grande Prairie Regional College for two years of pre-law studies (Arts/Commerce) in 1981 and received a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Alberta in 1987. She was admitted to the Bar of Alberta in 1987.
Madam Justice Veldhuis was appointed to the Provincial Court of Alberta in June 2007. Prior to her appointment, she was with the Department of Justice Canada as Senior Counsel of the Federal Prosecution Service from 2004 to 2006, Crown Prosecutor from 2003 to 2004 and Advisory Counsel from 1998 to 2003. She was a Crown Prosecutor with the Alberta Department of Justice from 1991 to 1993 and from 1996 to 1998. She was in private practice with Logan Watson & Company from 1988 to 1991 and with Clarkson Mochan Veldhuis from 1993 to 1995. Her main area of practice was criminal law.
Madam Justice Veldhuis was Vice-Chair of the Grande Prairie Regional College Foundation from 1993 to 1996 and President of the Grande Prairie Bar Association from 1992 to 1994. She was also a member of the Legal Aid Appeals Committee from 1989 to 1992.
This appointment is effective immediately.
