In that entire crowd of people, only one person who isn’t autistic.
This, of course, is sarcasm, written in response to all the Nazi apologists who proclaim Elon Musk didn’t throw two Nazi salutes at the Danger Yam’s inauguration. Instead, they say, he’s autistic and therefore socially awkward. Others say it was a “Roman salute.” A Roman salute, you say? From the Roman Empire? The same empire where one-third of the population was enslaved? The one that invaded and relentlessly conquered all their neighbors? The one that committed the world’s first genocide? The same empire that brutally tortured and murdered your lord Jesus Christ? The salute that alleged represents that Roman Empire? I guess that makes it okay. Again, sarcasm.
Regarding the brave man in the photo, his identity is uncertain, but there are two leading candidates.
The date of the photo is from June of 1936. It was taken at a shipyard in Hamburg to celebrate the launching of a military training vessel. Adolf Hitler was there, as was Deputy Führer Rudolf Hess. While it appears everyone in the crowd was being a good little obsequious Nazi, one man crossed his arms and said fuck this fascist bullshit.
Who was he?
A likely candidate is August Landmesser. He certainly had the motivation to take such a brave and potentially lethal stand against the Nazis.
Born in 1910, he joined the Nazi Party when he was twenty-one because it improved his chances of getting a job. We all did stupid shit when we were twenty-one, and the need to find work during the Great Depression so you can do things like eat can be a motivating force. Anyway, Landmesser later fell in love with a Jewish woman, Irma Eckler. In 1935, when the couple became engaged, Landmesser was kicked out of the party. Their marriage would be prevented by the enacting of the antisemitic and racist Nuremberg Laws on September 15, 1935. The couple’s first daughter was born six weeks later.
In 1936, Landmesser was working at the shipyard where the photo was taken. For obvious reasons, he was pissed at the Nazi regime. It’s entirely likely it was him in the photo. While he wouldn’t be identified and punished at the time, he and his family would suffer greatly at the hands of the fucking Nazis.
In 1937 the couple and their child attempted to flee Germany for Denmark but were stopped at the border for violating the nation’s anti-miscegenation laws. Their having a child together was considered “dishonoring the race.”My mother was born of such a mixed union around the same time A year later, Landmesser and Eckler were both sent to concentration camps. Eckler gave birth to the couple’s second daughter while imprisoned. Eckler was murdered by the Nazis in 1942. Landmesser was forced to fight in a penal battalion and died in Croatia in 1944. Their daughters survived the war, growing up in foster care.
There is another possible candidate for the man in the photo: Gustav Wegert. Some claim Wegert looks more like the man in the photo, but I’m skeptical, because Wegert was forty-six at the time. In 1936, the average forty-six-year-old looked more like they were sixty. Still, his story is worth telling.
The rally took place on a Sunday because Hitler didn’t want these rallies to interfere with military production so fuck your day off come idolize my fascist ass. Wegert was a devoted Christian who disapproved of spending Sunday at a political rally instead of at church. If the photo is of Wegert, it represents his stubborn resistance to worshiping an evil man instead of God.
In the end, it doesn’t matter who the man was. The photo speaks. The man’s arms are crossed, his face set in a visage of grim defiance and determination. Not all Germans were Nazis. BERLIN — Let’s not beat around the bush. When someone on a political stage, during a political speech, in front of a crowd including no shortage of far-right followers extends his right arm at an angle, repeatedly, they’re giving the Hitler salute.
There’s no need for “allegedly” or “reminiscent of” or “controversial.”
The gesture speaks for itself; it’s documented on video. Those who want to see something else in it, who don’t want to see a Hitler salute, do so at their own risk. For instance, those who now claim to have rediscovered the ancient “Roman salute” reveal little more than their eagerness to sugarcoat the obvious.
So here we are: Elon Musk raises his arm, sets the ultimate bait, and the world leaps to take it. On this momentous day, the inauguration of Donald Trump’s second presidency, the spectacle of attention politics is laid bare as never before.
Lose-lose proposition
At its very core, this is about attention — society’s most contested currency, at a time where every image, video, and soundbite vies to be noticed every second of the day. Trump and Musk excel at this game, especially in turning even bad publicity to their advantage. Case in point.
Everyone else faces an impossible choice.
What follows is predictable. Neo-Nazis and far-right extremists will see the extended right arm as a gesture of solidarity and affirmation. More moderate supporters might see it as an exaggerated expression of enthusiasm.
Meanwhile, everyone else faces an impossible choice: either ignore the breach of taboo — inadvertently contributing to its normalization — or call it out for what it is, fueling the outrage that opponents just thrive on.As I said, Nazism = Zionism. Look to how citizens courageously protesting for peace in Palestine and opposing USA & Israel mass slaughtering innocent kids and women are brutalized by police, university admins, politicians, community leaders, media, etc. That’s what is planned for those of us publicly daring to oppose the Nazi coup that has taken over the USA govt.
It’s a lose-lose situation, made worse by a growing segment of the population that dismisses outrage over a Nazi salute as mere virtue signaling.
The rules of the attention game
This has been the dynamic of the attention economy since at least 2016. The rules are clear, and its winners — those who revel in provocation and disruption — are as evident as the helpless losers.
Even journalism is trapped in this game. Media is the natural battleground for attention politics, amplifying controversies while trying to tackle them. This article itself may be read as a sign of that struggle.
The best available tactic is to distinguish the minor provocations from the seismic ones — like, say, a Nazi salute — and to shed light on the rules of the game while playing it.
Appeals to resist becoming desensitized to political atrocities are futile.
Political gestures and statements, like other stimuli, lose some of their impact over time. The first shock is always the strongest; by the third, the effect wanes. Humans adapt — that’s a fundamental trait. However noble, any appeal to resist becoming desensitized to political atrocities is ultimately futile.
For figures like Trump and Musk, the payoff of such attention-grabbing strategies isn’t merely the normalization of their positions, and style. It shows their power to dictate what the public grows accustomed to. They wield immense influence over the shifting standards of what is considered sayable and acceptable.

The Overton window
In the 1990s, political scientist Joseph Overton introduced the concept of the “Overton window,” delineating the range of ideas considered politically acceptable. Outside this window lie radical and unthinkable positions. Overton argued that real change requires shifting this window.
Over recent years, this shift has been palpable.
By January 2025 the farthest-right edge of said Overton window has expanded enough to include, unambiguously, a Nazi salute.
This is the grim culmination of a years-long game, where attention is the prize, and those who provoke and polarize have mastered the rules.

Neo-Nazis are celebrating Elon Musk making two Nazi-like salutes during a speech to tens of thousands of Trump supporters on Monday.
“Elections come and go. Some elections are important, some are not, but this one really mattered,” Musk said during his address inside the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, hours after Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. “And I just want to say thank you for making it happen. Thank you.”
At this point, Musk put his right hand on his chest before extending it straight out with his palm facing down and his fingers touching, a gesture widely recognized as the “Roman salute.” Adopted by the fascist movement a century ago, it was most famously used by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany, and is to this day associated with the fascist right, especially in Italy.
After he first made the gesture, Musk then turned around to members of the crowd who were seated behind him and, with his back to the camera, repeated the gesture.
“My heart goes out to you,” Musk added.
Musk subsequently shared a clip of his speech on X, but at the point where he makes the first salute, the clip posted by Musk cuts away to a shot of the audience before returning to show him making the second salute.
Musk, X, and the Trump administration did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but after this article was published Musk responded to the backlash in a post on X, writing: “Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired.”
The response from the neo-Nazi community across the globe was instant and unanimous.
“Incredible things are happening already,” Andrew Torba, the founder of Gab, a social media platform popular with antisemites and white supremacists, wrote over a picture of Musk giving the salute.
“The entire neo-Nazi movement seems to be eating it up,” says Nick Martin, an investigative journalist who closely tracks extremist groups and runs the online publication The Informant. “He gave two unmistakable Nazi salutes, and they got the message loud and clear.”
“WE ARE FUCKING BACK,” the administrator of a Nazi meme channel on Telegram wrote under a clip of Musk giving the salute. Members of the group responded with the lightning bolt emoji, a well-known neo-Nazi reference to the SS.
“I don’t care if this was a mistake, I’m going to enjoy the tears over it,” Christopher Pohlhaus, the leader of the American neo-Nazi group Blood Tribe, wrote on his Telegram channel under a gif of the Musk salute.
Keith Woods, a prominent far-right influencer from Ireland who has repeatedly praised Musk, responded to the actions by writing on X: “OK maybe woke really is dead.”
Evan Kilgore, a right-wing political commentator, wrote on X: “Holy crap … did Elon Musk just Heil Hitler at the Trump Inauguration Rally in Washington DC … This is incredible.” Kilgore later wrote: “We are so back.”
Kilgore, who is a Holocaust denier, has worked as an ambassador for Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA. The conservative activist group hosted a pre-inauguration ball on Sunday evening that featured JD Vance, who was inaugurated as vice president today, and the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr.
Musk has embraced far-right ideology and figures across the globe, including jailed Islamphobic activist Tommy Robinson in the UK, over the last two years.
Most recently, he has promoted the German far-right political party Alternative for Germany. In an hour-long interview with the party’s leader, Alice Weidel, earlier this month, Musk agreed with the wild conspiracy theory that Hitler was a communist.

Many of my friends on the center-right who are upset with me for making what I believe to be very obvious observations aren’t necessarily angry at me—they’re angry at the implications of what I’m saying.
The idea that neo-Nazism has entered the mainstream, potentially influencing the White House, is so alarming and existentially terrifying that it’s easier to lash out at the messenger than confront the reality.
If they accept this, it means that the political home they’ve invested so much of their identity in, the movement they’ve championed for years, has become something so morally repugnant that accepting it feels like breaking their own brain.
The cognitive dissonance is overwhelming.
What’s striking to me is the selective outrage. Many of these same people are quick to call everyone communists, often with little more than circumstantial evidence.
Yet, when it comes to countless instances of glaringly obvious signs of fascism in their own movement, they either look away or attack those pointing it out.
