Massive fish kill reported at Dalworthington Gardens lake after XTO Energy cited for taking water out for fracking; “All of us who’ve lived around here have been watching this lake go down for a very long time”

A small lake that was the subject of a News 8 story last week about low water levels is now the site of a growing fish kill. Neighbors who live around Pappy Elkins Lake in Dalworthington Gardens woke up to find thousands of carp floating on the surface Tuesday morning. As town workers tried to clean up the fish, residents gathered on the shoreline. “Disappointment doesn’t begin to describe how we feel right now,” said one man who didn’t want to be identified by name.

News 8 reported last week that XTO Energy was recently cited for pumping out nearly 1.4-million gallons of water for drilling in 2011. Although the company was permitted to use some of the lake’s water for its fracking operations, the amount in question was never authorized for removal, according to theTexas Commission on Environmental Quality. “All of us who’ve lived around here have been watching this lake go down for a very long time,” said the man. The company is fighting the citation and maintains it did nothing wrong.

The Dalworthington Gardens city manager wouldn’t discuss the lake level or fish kill News 8 on Tuesday. The TCEQ also faulted town management for failing to properly oversee how much water was being pumped out in its July report. [Emphasis added]
