Heavily frac’d Hudson’s Hope, BC, issues water advisory: “A resident…observed a substance surfacing into the Brenot Creek.” Do not “use the water from Lynx Creek and Brenot Creek” for drinking water, livestock watering, irrigation … “At this time we cannot comment on the water quality of water wells that are within the proximity of the contaminated site.”

Hudson’s Hope issues water quality advisory as heavy metals detected by Common Sense Canadian, September 10, 2014

A water quality advisory has been issued by the District of Hudson’s Hope, in northeast BC.

Residents are being warned not to drink or use water from Lynx and Brenot Creeks.

The district advises against using it for “drinking water, livestock watering, and irrigation due to the presence of heavy metals at concentrations above the Canadian Water Quality Guidelines.”

“Boiling water will not make the water potable,” the district warns. Abstain from using the water until further notice.

The contaminants discovered include:

  • aluminum
  • arsenic
  • barium
  • cadmium
  • chromium
  • iron
  • lead
  • manganese
  • uranium

The source of the contamination – and whether it is related to local shale gas activity – is unclear at the moment.

The Ministry of Environment has been alerted of the situation, the advisory notes. The district is conducting additional investigations and will provide updated information as soon as available.

Background Summary of the Water Quality of Brenot Creek and Lynx Creek by District of Hudson’s Hope, September 10, 2014 3:40 p.m.

A resident, late last week, observed a substance surfacing into the Brenot Creek. Samples of the water were taken and the results were passed on to the District of Hudson’s Hope. We observed that the contaminant levels, (including heavy metals), exceeded Canadian Water Quality Guidelines. We notified the Ministry of Environment and we issued a water advisory not to use the water from Brenot Creek and Lynx Creek for drinking water, for livestock watering, and irrigation.

At this time we cannot comment on the water quality of water wells that are within the proximity of the contaminated site. We have a hydro-geologist coming in on Tuesday to conduct more testing of the Lynx Creek watershed. We will post information and inform the public as to the quality of water in the Lynx Creek watershed as we receive it.

Thank-you.
